Manitoba Championships Result in 30 Smashed Records
Winnipeg, Manitoba // April 27 and 28, 2002 saw the Winnipeg-based Manitoba Masters Aquatic Club (MMAC) host the 2002 Manitoba Masters Swimming Provincial Championships at the Pan Am Pool, attracting 74 competitors ranging from 16 to 93 years of age, representing 8 clubs based out of Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and North Dakota.
While there were 27 Provincial-level Masters records broken, the highlight of the weekend was the three National-level records set by Kenora Swimming Sharks member and triathlete, Edie Fisher. Making her Provincials debut in the 45-49 age category, Fisher sliced over 8 seconds off of the National record for 200 Backstroke, and 5 seconds off of the National record for both
200 Butterfly and the 200 Individual Medley.
Manitoban swimmers fared well on the Provincial records scene, lead by MMAC member Glenn Davis, who also made his Provincials debut in the 45-49 age category this year. Davis shattered 6 Provincial records: 200 & 400 Individual Medley, 100 Back, and 200, 100 & 50 Butterfly. In total, MMAC captured 15 new Provincial records, while the Mid Can Masters captured 11, and
the Winnipeg Masters Swim Club captured two.
In mid-May, 20 Winnipeg swimmers will head out to Saskatoon, SK, to represent Manitoba in the 2002 Masters Canadian National Championships, where it is expected that more records will fall.
Masters Swimming in Manitoba is aimed at promoting fun, fitness, proper technique and participation in the sport of swimming for adults.
