2002 NE SCY CHAMPIONSHIP BIGGER AND FASTER THAN EVER
More than 670 swimmers ranging in age from 20 to 80 participated in the 2002 New England Short Course Yard Championships held this year at Harvard University's Blodgett Pool from Friday April 5th through Sunday April 27th. This is the largest masters swim competition east of California and this contest was both the largest and fastest NE Championship meet ever. Cambridge Masters (CMSC) won the 2002 NEM Workout Group competition outscoring more than 40 NEM-recognized workout groups throughout New England. Some 8 United States Masters (USMS) national records and some 104 New England masters records were broken over the weekend.
Congratulations to all 40 NEM Workout Groups for this year’s great performance.
8 USMS NATIONAL RECORDS ARE BROKEN
The swimming was exceptionally fast at this year’s NE SCY Championship. A number of people “aged-up” at this meet hoping to move up in the final standing only to find that with the increased competition it’s getting harder each year to improve your position within the age group. That wasn’t a problem for Joel Feldmann, who moved into the Women’s 50-54 age group or Jim Harvey who just joined the very competitive Men’s 35-39 as they both broke United States Masters National records.
Joel Feldman set two USMS National Women 50-54 records in the 50 freestyle (25.83) and 50 backstroke (30.72). Jim Harvey broke the USMS National Men 25-29 record in the 200 individual medley (1:53.98).
Five years ago, NEM assembled a relay team of 45+ men that broke several USMS National records. . This year, NEM put together a relay team of 45+ women that clearly surpassed the performance of the NEM men The fleet foursome of Joel Feldmann, Jacki Hirsty, Jenny Luker and Gayle Wettach (each USMS All Americans based on past individual performances) surprised no one when they broke 3 USMS 45+ Women National Relay records. It’s extremely rare that any club can field a relay team of four USMS All American swimmers in the same age group, at the same meet all in top condition. The swift quartet established new USMS marks for the 200 Free Relay(1:43.32 almost 5 seconds under the record and only .7 off the 35+ mark also held by NEM) 400 Free Relay (3:55.15 nearly 12 seconds under the mark( and 200 Medley Relay (1:57.99 nearly 3 seconds under the record). We predict that some of these records will last more than 10 years—unless the NEM fierce-some fore-some should try again next year.
CMSC, a NEM workout group of some 120 swimmers who train at Harvard’s Blodgett pool, have broken at least one USMS National Relay record at every NE Championship meet for the past three years. This streak remains intact as CMSC broke USMS 19+ Mixed 400 free and 800 free relay records.
