Extreme Headaches While Swimming

I've been having a problem recently. When I swim, about 300 yds in, I get a really bad headache. This just started happening about two weeks ago. I have been swimming for about year now and have never had anything like this. The pain is unbearable to the point where it feels like a migraine. If anyone has had the same problem please let me know. Are my goggles too tight? Maybe my swimcap? Am I depriving my brain of oxygen !? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I would like to be able to swim without this pain!
  • Hi All3girl! Have your headaches gone away? I noticed the original date of your post and I wondered... Was it your goggles, neck muscles or something more serious? Just wondering and hoping you are ok!

After you rule out blood pressure problems and dehydration. Consider having a chiropractor manipulate the cervical spine. Specifically the suboccipital segments. This should only require a few visits and no x-rays. I'm a chiropractor I was just adjusted today for the same problem. It stems from lifting my head up instead of rotating in line with my body to breath. I swam my first week of masters last week and got really fatigued. My technique fell apart. You may have done the same. By the way do not have a chiropractor manipulate the cervical spine unless he does your blood pressure first.

Hugo- I think you just nailed my problem. I have always used clear goggles and just recently switched to dark goggles, oddly enough, right around the same time I started getting headaches. I wonder why the tint causes a headache? Oh well, I guess I'll just switch back to clear and see if that resolves the problem. Thank You Hi everyone!! Is it right? I have the same problem and i am going crazy looking for information!!! Tomorrow I woult try this solution

I used to get back pounding headaches while swimming and after swimming. Doctor theorized it was sinus problems. I now take a daily nose spray and it has cleared up my problems.

hey all3girl i currently have a thread up its titled swimming goggles by rab anyways i am designing some goggles and i was wondering if you could take the survey enclosed in the post. i was just wondering if you could take it do to what the subject your talking about involves swimming. this also goes out to anyone who sees this post if you could take it i would be very happy its only 9 questions long thank you.
  • This is most likely related to your goggles. There are some swimmers who get goggle migraine. Try another style or try loosening them slightly.
