Solo Swimmers

Hey, solo swimmers! Welcome to the thread for all of us who train solo. Whether you train on your own due to a lack of a Masters team in your area (or for any other reason), this is our virtual locker room. Please post training tips that you think would be helpful, or anything else you would like to share with the rest of us. Have a rant? Go ahead and vent here! :rantonoff: I'll start with a tip: The most frustrating thing for me training solo is not having a coach on deck to evaluate my stroke and keep me on track, so I bought a waterproof camera and enlisted the help of my husband to periodically shoot video of all four strokes. Shooting underwater video became a knee/back buster, so I bought a camera mount and attached it to PVC pipe, so my husband could stand up straight to shoot underwater video. The camera gets dunked underwater, and he twists the pipe to pan the camera as I swim by. Today, I bought a 2-pack of 12-inch "Gear Tie" reusable rubber twist ties (available at Home Depot), so I can tie the PVC pipe to the pool ladder (located in the corner of the pool) and shoot video myself. (If I angle the camera just right and keep it on wide angle, I can video me coming and going.) 10687 After each video session, I upload the videos to my desktop computer and compare my stroke to my favorite Go Swim stroke videos to see what I'm doing well (or not). I also post them on the Forums for feedback. Ok, solo swimmers, what's your tip?

Here's the crazy workout I did not much yard around 950 yards but some sprinting of the different strokes at 25 yard. A 25 freestyle and a 26 or 27 fly. A 29 breaststroke. I did free In yards at 56 but breaststroke and fly at 1:00. I hold breaststroke better in a 50 than free sometimes. Now, this is interesting to hold *** better than free when one does a 25 yard and then go to a 50 yard.

I just read that Adam Peatty was a poor freestyler as a kid but the coach noticed his breaststroke. I think us breaststrokers are ok to do other strokes as well since you use other muscle groups but some of us are built more for breaststroke.

I use the toys today instead of straight swimming like kickboard and pull bouy and did all the pulling breaststroke. I feel better doing that. I did my fastest 100 yard backstroke practice in 2:22 ll
  • In my t=day 1:05 to 1:07 was a national caliber breaststroker. And to think, these are 13 year olds.........

My daughter inherited my capabilities (only a LOT better). About a year and a half ago, she wanted to improve her IM. Her 50 times were in the neighborhood of 27 for free, 28 for fly, 30 for back........and 46 for ***. We got her lessons focused exclusively on that, and got her down to I think 38 pretty quickly. But she still has never gotten below a 36.42. Now she's 13, so doing 100's. Her best is a 1:19.01. The girls close to her on the IM's are doing 1:05-06's. She's a AAAA flyer, and AAA in back and free........and BB in ***. Her *** stroke peers are like AAAA in ***, but A to AA in the other strokes. Seems that's why IM's seem to be going to *** strokers, they are great in that, and good in others, whereas non-*** strokers are good/great in others, and just stink in ***.

  • Seeing my doc on Wed. but the therapist said it could be 3-6 months before I can swim freestyle again. Maybe I need to hone up on the breaststroke but I can't do it worth a one legged frog.

Was your surgery a success? What did they end up having to do with your shoulder? Anything you can do in the pool is better than nothing at all, even if you look like a one-legged frog! :agree:
  • Yes, it was a success. I had a torn supraspinatus with a bone spur making it worse. It'll be 12 weeks on April 1. I'm only starting on active recovery. Up till now it's been all passive motion. I'm doing aqua therapy and love it. Unfortunately for some reason I woke up from the anesthesia with vertigo which has abated but not completely gone away. I get it when I'm tired, or whenever I lie down or get up. It only lasts a few seconds, which is an improvement, but I don't know if it will ever completely go away. Otherwise, I feel pretty good and I've been working out in the ways I'm allowed. I miss swimming. I love being in that freakin' therapy pool, though. I just want to lie down on my back and float but of course that's not allowed.:D
  • And to think, these are 13 year olds......... It doesn't seem like that long ago not many girls/women could go a sub 1:00 in the 100 ***. This year at NCAAs 19 women did it in prelims!
