Hey, solo swimmers! :wave: Welcome to the thread for all of us who train solo. Whether you train on your own due to a lack of a Masters team in your area (or for any other reason), this is our virtual locker room. Please post training tips that you think would be helpful, or anything else you would like to share with the rest of us. Have a rant? Go ahead and vent here! :rantonoff:
I'll start with a tip:
The most frustrating thing for me training solo is not having a coach on deck to evaluate my stroke and keep me on track, so I bought a waterproof camera and enlisted the help of my husband to periodically shoot video of all four strokes. Shooting underwater video became a knee/back buster, so I bought a camera mount and attached it to PVC pipe, so my husband could stand up straight to shoot underwater video. The camera gets dunked underwater, and he twists the pipe to pan the camera as I swim by.
Today, I bought a 2-pack of 12-inch "Gear Tie" reusable rubber twist ties (available at Home Depot), so I can tie the PVC pipe to the pool ladder (located in the corner of the pool) and shoot video myself. (If I angle the camera just right and keep it on wide angle, I can video me coming and going.)

After each video session, I upload the videos to my desktop computer and compare my stroke to my favorite Go Swim stroke videos to see what I'm doing well (or not). I also post them on the Forums for feedback.
Ok, solo swimmers, what's your tip?
Thank you. It was meant as a joke. I have sometimes challenged (& so has my insurance) surgeons' orders and they were not always based on science. Newer methods of surgeries, newer research, and I have a bit more background in science than most do. What one learns in residency 20+ years ago can be different than today's reality. All different variables, so no absolutes. {shrug}
CME, or continuing medical education, is pretty much mandatory, and physicians have to take boards every few years to continue to practice. It is one of the better professions out there for that, I never dealt with that as an engineer, but my wife has to take boards every few years (may be as many as 5). THings change, but so do physicians. They have to to keep practicing. I wouldn't discount what your surgeon says because you don't like it.

You took (most of) the words right out of my fingertips, 67! My father was a doctor, so I can attest to that. That continuing education was the reason he missed a lot of my high school swim meets and concerts.
It's old age and it seems to be hereditary as a good number of my family have had shoulder repairs.
I've decided to use a physical therapy practice that includes aqua therapy (when I'm able to jiggle in and out of a bathing suit), which the doc thinks is a great idea.
Sorry gang. Not falling for the ganging up on me again (I'm wise to it and the politics behind it). In my case, it was the right decision because it was the medically sound decision. There are a lot of people who have gotten harmed (I'm one of them) and we learn a lot. The insurance went with my decisions and teaching docs have because they were sound for my case based on medical research, which the doctors were not.
That's all I will say and the discussion, since its turning into a cat fight, stops here.
Wow. I haven't a clue what you're talking about. Cat fight? What?? Don't you think you are reacting with a bit of paranoia here? I can't begin to figure this out, so I won't bother. :shakeshead:
This is is a thread I started for the solo swimmer. We are a happy little community who have supported each other through 300 posts about swimming solo. It's not about "politics," "cat fights," or "ganging up" on anybody. It's definitely not about you.
Feel free to start a new thread about you, and I will promise not to ever, EVER post on it. I can't speak for 67, but I'm guessing he might feel the same way.
Well rats. I need surgery on my right shoulder. I was just getting into the pool regularly when it started to hurt back in August, and after a shot and pt the doc says the tear will only get worse, and there's a bone spur rubbing against the tendon. I'm pretty upset. This throws a monkey wrench into a lot of my plans, from resuming my swimming to going to grad school (can't drive for at least a couple of months). Someone tell me a joke to cheer me up.
I am sorry DeniseMW. I have surgery tomorrow that will take me out for a bit, so I feel and understand for you. I can't manage a joke on those circumstances but only to say that I hope things are going to look up after this and no more shoulder issues will happen.
Same to you.
Need to pray for any doctor that sets a week (or two for the big stuff) for being out of the pool. That's just wrong. Especially any one that argues for longer time without a medical researched reason. :)
:banana::D You go, girl.
Update: MRI says a full thickness tear of the supraspinatus tendon. I do not like the sound of that.
Oh, I don't like the sound of that either. I'm sorry you need surgery again! Is this from the dog taking you for a walk, or is this a new injury caused by something different? I sure wish you luck with this! :agree:
