Major Correction:
This is no longer a USMS-sponsored swim.
Kingdom Swim will go on as planned, under the aegis of WOWSA (World Open Water Swimming Association). There will be a 10-mile WOWSA championship swim. Edited March 3, 2013
Kingdom Swim takes place on Saturday, July 6, Lake Memphremagog, northern VT. 1-, 3-, 6-, and 10-mile courses for adults; youth get a 1/4- mile swim in addition:

The 10-mile course offers both a championship wave (for those vying for the USMS OW champioship) and a non-championship wave.
A qualifying swim is available at 2-, 4-, and 6-mile distances for those who need it.
New this year is a phat week of swimming multiple lakes in August, called Swim the Kingdom:

NEKOWSA (Northeast Kingdom Open Water Swimming Association) is putting this lovely, woodsy area on the map as a destination for swimming in the Northeast.
The location is Newport, VT:
Try 4-5 hours.
Probably closer to 4.
It is three hours from the dollar rent a car exit at the Manchester airport to the hardware store in newport with the ice cream shop in front.
That store has an excellent supply of rope which you can use to tie your water bottles together, at good prices.
And the soft serve cones at the ice cream store are huge.

A recent email from the meet director indicated the championship 10-mile swim was already half-subscribed (50 spots remain). The non-championship 10-mile swim is wide open.
Registration closes June 1 for all courses.
How far is that from the north shore of Boston?
I have made this drive from west of Boston many times. From the north shore it will take you no more than 4 hours with a pit stop. If you go at a good clip without stopping it will be closer to 3:40.
And the soft serve cones at the ice cream store are huge.
In VT that style of ice cream is called a creemee. If you ask for a soft serve they will know you are from "away".
I'm back in the 10 miler this year.

It doesn't take long for people to peg me as "different" no matter where I am! Next time I go there, I'll pay attention to see what people call it when they order, they only have soft serve so people might just call it a cone or cup, but I'll be on the lookout.

Nope, here in Vermont, it is a creamee. Soft-serve everywhere else. Creamee here. The best ones are the maple ones made with real maple. (I might be biased.):)
I'm about 90% committed to signing up for the 10-mile Championship swim. I've seen the lodging listings on the web site, any recommendations for someone traveling solo?
