New ultra-marathon swim in Lake Memphremagog

By my count, there are six organized swims of 25K (15.5 miles) or longer in the United States next year: - the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim - the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim - Swim Across the Sound - the Ederle Swim - a new 25K in Pensacola - and, the various stages of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim. You can add another to that list. September 8, 2012, Phil White and the Northeast Kingdom O.W.S. Association (the folks behind the Kingdom Swim) will put on a 25-mile swim in Lake Memphremagog between Newport, VT and Magog, Quebec. That's right - you get to swim across an international border. :canada: For more info, see the official website. The field is limited to 20 swimmers. As you begin planning for next year, let me also remind you of my U.S. Marathon Swim Calendar, which includes all organized swims of 10K (6 miles) or longer. I've been adding 2012 dates as they become available.
  • Good point! My bad. Turns out I also forgot to mention the 17-mile Rose Pitonof Swim in NYC - oddly, on the same day as Ederle.

Evan "There are six organized swims of 25K (15.5 miles) or longer in the United States next year" and one of them is "various stages of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim"? Now I think David and Rhoni deserve more recognition than that. How about: Prior to last year there were only 5 organized swims of 25K (15.5 miles) or longer in the United States each year. Through the amazing efforts of David and Rhondi that number has now almost doubled.

This is one of the best and toughest marathons out there. I've coached a swimmer twice at Magog back in the late 1990s in the pro race. Because of 9/11, the race course was changed due to the difficulty in securing visa's for many of the foreign swimmers. Magog is one of the nicest places I've ever been. The people are fantastic. Highly recommended.

Highly recommended. This swim was brutal last year... a midnight start against a 20+ mph head wind. Liz Fry, Greg O'Connor, Elaine Howley, and Charlotte Bryn all finished. (I was rather happy when the swimmer I was crewing for had enough.. it was freezing, and all my clothes were soaked.)
