What can you guys tell me about this swim. 7.5 miles. I will be travelling about 7 hours so I don't have the luxury of going and checking it out. I will be doing all my training in a pool, which is unfortunate. the lakes won't get above 50 untill may. What kind of yardage should i be looking at? thanks all.

cmonster, I'm doing it this year for the first time, too. so i'll see you there. tried to do it last year, but the rough weather forced us to do an alternate swim in the inland lake. I am certainly no ows expert, but i've done a couple 10K swims and this isn't that much longer. i think you have plenty of yardage under your belt, and anyway at this point, it is what it is, so my view is stop thinking about it! Pace is the key. As one friend recently told me: swim as slowly as you possibly can, then swim slower than that. especially in the beginning when nerves will push the other way. i certainly will wear a wetsuit, as i don't expect temps to be higher than 70, if that, and i am skinny and get cold even in much warmer water. and bring fuel. see you there....

My daughter swam this race last year, as a lead up to her swimming the Channel. Weather was so bad they moved the swim to an inland lake. Undaunted a few of the swimmers (my daughter included) had one of the bigger boats escort them to a point part way thru the race and back. This swim lead to the utterance of "You know, if you die.....you die." from a worried race official, not sanctioning the swim. LOL

Good deal. I'm getting pretty psyched for this swim. Going to one more big week in and cut it back to 14k then 10k. I am really hoping for good weather. should be a good day.

Well it's over. We had a good day. I paced really well and hit the 3 mile mark just undr an hour. I felt great untill the shore just stopped getting closer. We fought some current for the last 2 miles and got an extra bonus of about a mile. More bang for my buck! Finished up 2nd overall. A good conclusion to May as I ran my first marathon 2 weeks ago in 3:17. not bad for a swimmer...:)
