Hi All - Swimming Key for the first time this year and have a few questions.
1) Sun block - have heard all types of combinations, options - can anyone who swam this in past tell me what they used?
2) Boat vs Kayak - A family member has a small flats boat (great for shallow) water and I'm thinking of having my support team ride on this. Any reason I should consider a kayak instead?
3) Any advice for folks who want to see parts of the swim, but won't be a boat? Is their best bet just to play at the beach and then watch the finish?
4) Does anyone know how many swimmers competed last year (2007)?
Any other advice for a newbie would be much appreciated!

My favorite sun block for open water is Hawaiian Tropic "Cler Zinck". (No, I haven't spelled it wrong, there is a dash thingy above the "e" in "Cler".) This stuff is a bit sticky but really stays on and lasts for hours.
All your queries are answered on their site for the swim, be sure to hit the link toread about tips for a successful event. Good luck, see y'all there!:oldman:
Ralph! You're going to be there? me too.. 1st time doing anything longer than those Bonaire 10k's.
As for sunblock.. my favorites are bullfrog and aloe gator.
As for the boat.. fumes from an engine can hang close to the water where you have to breath. It can work if the boat stays down wind of you, but a kayak would be more ideal if your mate can handle the exercise.
But that's all I know.. it will be a first for me too. Can't wait.. (till its over)
Hey Derek!!
He means Amanda, not "mandy" :)
nobody's called me that for 30 yrs.
How are you gonna train? I'm on my own and have no idea!! What will be ur longest swim?
I haven't been able to find much information about this year's swim. The other SAKW (the one on June 20th) has lots on information on their website, but I'm not sure how much applies to the sanctioned swim.
I was trying to look up how many participants they are expecting this year, whether there is a prerace meeting the day before, links to last years results, and most importantly, whether there is a post race party.:drink: Does anyone have this info?
Thanks!
Ah…. those legendary Key West socials –have a blast. There is a reason Hemingway was keen of and spent time in Key West!
-swim fast Kim, Ralph, Derek, Mandy, and everyone else…..
AnslieStokes –for your cheering squad there are several locations they will be able to watch you from, I am sure these (sunset piers and cow key bridge -where you will swim under) and others will be discussed at the pre race meeting.
Thank you Randy! The seas look great for Saturday morning! I'm hopeful that the race director will discuss logistics at the pre-swim party on Friday night. If anyone has any further tips/advice for new swimmers and/or boat support please post!
