Swimming Pool Age Restrictions

Our pool created a rule this summer that no kid (aged 4 and under) can be in the main swimming pool, period. This includes with a parent and regardless of whether or not they are wearing swim diapers. They are only allowed to swim in the baby pool, full stop. You can imagine the controversy this has caused. I find this to be a ridiculous rule and plan to fight it, but was wondering whether it is more pervasive than I thought. The rationale seems to be related to keeping poop/vomit out of the pool but traditionally, this has not been a problem for this pool and when it has been, it's not exclusively a 4 and under problem! Seems like a sledgehammer to an ant, IMHO.
  • I think this is a fantastic rule. Seconded. If there is a baby pool, then that's where they should be. It's not like kids under four are swimming laps and need the big pool.
  • Wait a minute here. I'm talking about a FAMILY POOL for which I pay alot of money to belong. There are no lap lanes here so no one to get in the way of. I agree parents should take more responsibility for their children whether potty trained or not. I hate it when the lifeguards have to do the parents' job. However, I think it's ridiculous that my 4 year old, who can swim and who is potty trained cannot swim with me in this FAMILY pool. Frankly, how are they supposed to learn how to swim unless you violate the rule. And think about the situation where you have one parent with two kids ages 4 and 6. One can't be in the baby pool and one can't be left alone in the big pool Did I mention, no one over the age of 5 in the baby pool? Makes no sense. Ok so I know I asked for opinions and should take what I get but I don't think I accurately reflected the full story and even if I did, I guess we can just agree to disagree. Thanks for the feedback.

I think your pool has made an excellent decision. Just because it is FAMILY POOL doesn't mean I want to swim in poo. And, the amount of money you pay is the same as everyone else and doesn't entitle your kid to poop in the pool. Speaking of which, what does money have to do with it in the first place? Everyone wants special rules for their special kids and the net result is another endless Summer of 4 hours pool closures. I'm not rolling the dice on any 4 year old and their poopy habits, no matter how exceptionally they swim.
  • Frankly, how are they supposed to learn how to swim unless you violate the rule. Good question. Does the pool offer lessons and, if so, are the four and unders allowed in the main pool for them? Did I mention, no one over the age of 5 in the baby pool? Makes no sense. Well, that is a little screwy. So basically you can't swim with your child until they are at least five years old.

Seconded. If there is a baby pool, then that's where they should be. It's not like kids under four are swimming laps and need the big pool. 3rd. The baby pool is perfect for children that are too small for the big pool, aren't potty trained or whose parents don't use swim diapers.

They are only allowed to swim in the baby pool Babies swimming in the baby pool, what's wrong with that?
  • That really is the problem. It seems a reasonable solution is children under age 4 must be checked for swim diapers before they are allowed in the pool. No swim diaper = no admittance. I also don't have a problem with requiring swim diapers or charging for code brown that's traced to your kid. But keeping the under four crowd out of the pool all together? Just go ahead and make it an adults only swim club and be done with it -- and set the rules before you take peoples' money.

It's not new. People now just think that Junior should be allowed to go wherever he wants, literally, because they paid their (do)dues.
  • Has anyone documented a successful swim diaper save? In all the years my kids (three of them) were in swim diapers, the containment capacity was never challenged by a significant volume. I am not sure they'd really be up to the task.

Code browns are out of control. I don't know why parents can't put their kids in rubber pants but apparently it is problem. That really is the problem.
