Shout out to my nephew, Patrick, Sophomore walk-on at UMBC, who's worked his tail off these past two years and has been rewarded. First member of the family to ever qualify, and in his father's and uncle's favorite event!
Finally got around to thumbing through the 2012 SI Swimsuit Edition & noticed there were a few pages with Phelps & some with Natalie Coughlin. How could I have missed this?
Michael Phelps was featured with Bar Refaeli
Natalie Coughlin Body Paint Speedo
She appears to be quite fit and healthy. Excellent six pack.
You're welcome.
It would be interesting to see how those percentages line up against other sports. For instance...is the average high school swimmer more likely to make the olympics than the average high school football player is to make the NFL?
Kind of apples to oranges. Practically everyone in the NFL played in high school or prep, but swimming is highly club oriented. You have a lot of people who don't swim high school. Could be tricky to get the right numbers together. Safe to say, they're both exclusive. The internet says there are 1.1 or 1.2 million hs football players. With 1,696 NFL'ers, that's around 0.15%. If you include everyone that plays youth football, I bet you'll get to a number similar to Ande's 0.02% (or lower).

THE U.S. Olympic Trials format will be changed this year -- at least for prelims. With about 1,700 swimmers expected to race in Omaha, USA Swimming announced on Friday that all 10 lanes of the pool would be used in prelims, and that flyover starts would be used, meaning each heat will start just a few seconds after the previous heat has finished. Semifinals and finals, however, will still use eight lanes, with the two outside lanes remaining open.
Good call.
