Just returned from the DAM scm meet in Dallas. The format was slightly different this year, with all events on one day, but the pool conditions were the same. Tapered and shaved and wore Aquablade jammers instead of a full body B70. My training had been solid, and I'd had no recent illnesses.
What I found was a 2 second difference per 100 in the 400. Granted this was the last event (at 11:30 am), and I had already swum the 1500 four hours earlier (which was by the way slower than my 1650 in February also wearing a B70). I plan to retaper for zones in two weeks and swim another 400 (first event of the day). Perhaps I will be able to shave a bit of time off (no pun intended).
Train harder? Train smarter? No--I believe the difference in suits is very real.

my 2011 suit will be 25 lbs lighter than my 2010 suit..... wonder if i can get a "fina approved" stamp on my ass?
It's unfortunate you made the decision to not maximize your training by making the minuscule investment in a legal and fast suit in Atlanta.
OK. I'll bite.
It's clear you don't like ElaineK. I don't blame you. I don't like her blue/bold font and abundant use of smilies either. For this reason I have her on ignore. Having said that, I don't doubt for a moment that she is a wonderful person, that I would be happy to know her in the real world, and that if she reverted to the standard black font and reduced her use of smilies I would take her off of ignore without hesitation.
Being this rude to her is just beyond the pale. She obviously will not change her ways for you, so why continue to be so mean? Unless (and probably even if) she wronged you personally, there is no reason for your attacks to be so personal and cruel.
Just put her on ignore. It can be highly effective. She clearly doesn't say anything constructive in your mind.
In fact, if it weren't for you quoting her, I would never see any of her posts. As far as I'm concerned, you are perpetuating your perceived issues with her by repeating them in your posts.
Of course, this could all be good natured ribbing between willing and consenting participants. If that's the case, allow me to slink away quietly....
Thanks for clearing that up.
Hey man, I was only trying to give context for why the suits didn't seem to help me as much as they help others. I'll be old and (hopefully not) flabby some day too! Youth isn't an accomplishment I meant to brag about, it's a state of being. And in my late 30s, there are already plenty of adults who beg to differ with my assertion that I'm still young!
Thanks for the lectures today. I don't mind an opinion if it is based on actual experience. I would say the same thing to anyone who has not actually competed in the suits - authorship is irrelevant.
I'll be sure to run all my posts by you first.
Is there a correlation between purists and lectures?
We are not kids, and age does have something to do with the suits helping us not 20-30 somethings more. That does not mean we are old, flabby or need to train more. Many of us who preferred the speed suits are in no need of "manning up" whatsoever -- myself, Gull, Geek, Patrick and Jim Clemmons being examples.
The suits produced faster times. I will try, largely, to not dwell on my speed suit times and start over.
OK. I'll bite.

You're right. I was about as likely to get you to change with my post as you are to get ElaineK to change with yours. I'll stop trying. Will you?
Like anything else, the suits will have had a greater impact on some more than others. Body morph, level of fitness, walls, and the events you swim. I actually swam faster in a tracer light than b7o. I have also seen swimmers off their 800 times by about 2to3 seconds per hundred. Backstroke seems the least affected in the sprint..but again not by all. Many swimmers have to just suck it up and face the new reality. And those lucky ones not affected.........well everyone will catch up soon enough!
If I am to be judged by the color and appearance of my font (which I do not put in bold, by the way) rather than who I am as a person, then that person judging me is shallow, in my mind, and not someone I would like to know.
You're a lovely person and I'm glad to have met you (online). I respect your opinions and I agree with you frequently. That said, your typeface and color choices drive me up the wall.
:D
(Oh hey everyone, the REPORT POST function seems to work pretty well today. Give it a shot when you see a nasty post. Just sayin'.)
I should point out to all concerned that we will be embarking upon an unprecedented period of unchecked vitriol and soul-searing bile from The Geek: after all, his beloved North Carolina basketball Tarheels (representing true Deep South individualism) are playing like a group of lost and frightened girl scouts and his hated Dookies (quasi-northern surrogate socialists) are Number One. Truly, it is a difficult time to be The Geek...
But I'm still (relatively) young with a (relatively) fit body shape. The older and more flabby you are, the more the suits probably benefited you.
Thanks for clearing that up.
