Swim Wisdom

Swim Wisdom is a thread dedicated to the little bits of wisdom we accumulate in swimming. It's not about swimming faster it's about living better & smarter. share Practical stuff Like: I've noticed my Teva Mush flip flops smell awful when they are slightly wet & I leave them in my car. So I leave them outside my car on the window under my windshield wiper blades, they dry faster, don't stink up my car & so far they haven't been stolen. Done this with towels & suits too dry rubber tech suits inside out keep your goggles inside a case when you're not using them & they won't get as scratched up please share what works for you Share what you know
  • I put mine in a ziploc bag, but it still leaks and the ink runs. Why the heck did it never once occur to me to write in pencil? Doh! Thanks for the tip. :D if you type the workout out, print it out or even photo copy the handwritten one, it won't smear once the paper gets wet.
  • If I'm swimming alone, I write my workout on a 4x6 card with a sharpie, and affix it to my water bottle with water. I learned to do this at the LCM pool in NYC when I caught some dude drinking out of my water bottle, so after that I stuck my workout to my water bottle to mark it. Also, I like to dry my ears by putting napkins in them and letting them sit there for a few minutes. Capillary action draws out the water.
  • Lots of people write their workout down before going to the pool then put it in a Ziploc bag at the end of their lane. Another technique is to forget the ziploc and just dip the sheet of paper in the water and stick it to something like a kickboard, If you write with pencil you don't have to worry about the writing smearing or running. That's a great idea, but I like to keep track of my stroke count on my broken 200 breaststroke workouts, as well as heart rate and split times...
  • sometimes coaches bring workouts on computer paper, one for each lane. which gets wet and messed up, so get it wet & set it on a kick board, it will stick to it. when you want to read the next set pick up the kick board.

This really isn't wisdom and should be a no-brainer, but for those of us who swim outside: SUNSCREEN.
  • I print my favorite workouts off at school and run them 2X through the lamination machine! This keeps them forever water-tight. Patrick B. had a great idea if your pool lacks a pace clock. Buy an inexpensive waterproof digital watch (timex ironman type) and wrap it around your water bottle. Your lane now has its own individual pace clock!
  • For the guys: Don't forget to tie our suits. Nothing worse than diving into a pool and feeling your suit around your ankles. Worse..... or BETTER?

  • After melting a few Polar bottles in the dishwasher, I remembered my mother's trick for cleaning my lunchbox thermos. This works for even the nasty ones you left in the car for a week and a half, and without bleach. Tear up waxed paper into small pieces. Loosely fill the bottle with the paper. Put a drop of dish detergent in the bottle and about 2-3 inches of warm water. Shake like crazy. Dump out the soapy water and paper and rinse well. You might have to wipe around the inside of the top of the bottle and wash the lid, but this really gets the grunge out of the bottle.

When I was learning to swim in college, I always carried a single gallon sized ziplock baggie with me. You could reuse it again and again with the workouts given to you.
