He shouldn't be able to compete in swimming events because he is using performance enhancing drugs (despite being prescribed medically) for non-medical, performance enhanced purposes. Cheater Get over it. Tons of masters swimmers use anabolic steroids, and they're not harming anyone by doing it.
  • GRRRRRRRR. Get 'em Gull. A valid medical opinion.
  • Oh Fort, I love it when you call me out. I don't know, but I suspect. Masters swimmers are a subset of fitness freaks in general. You know, gym rats. In that group, a certain proportion choose to use steroids. I imagine there are masters swimmers who do. I don't really care. Big muscles are over-rated in swimming.
  • Too bad there isn't an anonymous way to find out the answer to this question. I know if I didn't have to give my name I'd admit to using steroids. :lmao: :lmao: Seriously though, I wonder how many USMS are using them? I would venture a guess at not too many.
  • Seriously though, I wonder how many USMS are using them? I would venture a guess at not too many. I thought about this and it occurred to me that I assume few are using steroids just because I don't perceive steroids as prevalent in swimming generally. I mean, have steroids ever been an issue in our sport at the club or college level?
  • I guess it is a problem as people have been suspended for it: Michelle Smith (IRL), a female breaststroker (US) last year. There are many more. I think there is a lot of performance enhancing, but not necessarily bulking up stuff. :2cents:

I mean, have steroids ever been an issue in our sport at the club or college level? The East German women demonstrated they can help, there have been others like Michelle Smith over the years and there are certainly rumors of use by China. I'm sure there have been men in elite swimming who have been busted, but none come to mind. I do think (no data to back me up) that our sport is generally cleaner than a lot of others, but not naive enough to believe that we don't have some elites out there now who are using and masking. For Masters, though, unless you've got some ancillary health reason where the PED provides a real health benefit, I honestly don't see the point. The risk-reward balance seems way tilted on the risk side. I mean, really, what's the upside?
  • he's the guy you see in the Ceneginics ads in all those airline magazines That's what cracks me up. Who seriously thinks that an ad in Southwest Spirit is a source of high-quality healthcare information?

I suspected one person in particular of using steroids during my college years, but I do not believe steroid use is widespread in masters swimming. There simply is not a sufficient payoff. Why on earth would you risk the significant health consequences to set masters records? It doesn't make any sense.
