How bad is it to swim in a practice suit at nationals
Former Member
Could anyone give me their thoughts on swimming at masters nationals in a practice suit?
Will people think I'm out to prove something or can you really wear what you want without judgment at nationals? Won't my *team* be annoyed at my not wearing the best suit particularly when I wore the fastest thing on the market for the past year or two?
I see that the new Speedo LZRs are close to $400 after shipping and tax. This is close to the B70 price. I have many a *now* illegal speed suit and I don't feel like continuing to play the game by buying yet another suit that I think is inferior to what's out there. Thoughts?
Can we do that? Is it legal to wear a doctored 'illegal' suit? Cause, I was thinking the same thing... they are being sold at super-great prices now that we can't wear them in competition!

No, you couldn't legally alter a suit like the Speedo LZR. The materials don't conform to the current rules. You could alter something like a FS Pro legs to make it into a jammer, though, because it doesn't use non-porous materials.

According to FINA rules, I doubt it. I recall there was something prohibitting customization of approved suits. 1st a suit w/ legs isn't approved, 2nd cutting the legs of would be customizing.
For masters, I don't see why anyone would care,
(but I'm no where near the level of setting records, top ten etc, so I doubt anyone cares what suit I wear, and given my physique, most would probably prefer I wear a full body suit)
Too bad. :D
I've actually never worn one... so, i guess I won't be missing anything. I'm probably just going to keep wearing my normal suit... even for nationals. It has skulls and crossbones on it... so, i can pretend it's 'high-tech'.

Wear whatever you want. I never waste time worrying about what other people think about what I wear at meets.
How on earth is the Speedo LZR at $400 different from the Pro at $250? Even thinner?
And I agree with Fortress that no one will care. Even though there have been lots of tech suits at recent USMS Nationals doesn't mean everyone is wearing one. Plenty of people were still swimming in briefs, jammers, recreational suits, you name it.

I think it was a FS Pro now that you mention it. I don't know all the names of the tech suits since I never wore one.
Although I will be getting whatever the highest legal tech jammer there is for Nationals in May.:D
One of my teammates wore a poly Speedo endurance for her 200 fly at Nationals in Clovis last May, and I certainly don't think that anyone cared at all. We (her teammates) just thought that she was an animal because we'd take any advantage we could to survive a 200 fly.
