I know I can't be the only person who is not at Nationals who is nevertheless keeping track of how many people in my age group are beating my best times of the season.
I am happy to report in this inaugural edition of Beat Watch 2009, that in the 400 IM, two guys have beaten my time--
1 Gilchrist, Donald 55 NCMS 4:55.00 4:41.09
29.32 1:01.98 (32.66)
1:39.57 (37.59) 2:16.63 (37.06)
2:56.44 (39.81) 3:36.93 (40.49)
4:09.45 (32.52) 4:41.09 (31.64)
2 Clemmons, Jim 59 MAM 4:44.50 4:43.38
29.59 1:02.58 (32.99)
1:41.09 (38.51) 2:18.06 (36.97)
2:58.68 (40.62) 3:40.31 (41.63)
4:12.70 (32.39) 4:43.38 (30.68)
The good news: both these fellows had ALREADY beaten me with swims earlier in the season, so nobody new at Nationals has thus far dislodged my precarious hold on a possible top 10 in this event...
I invite anyone to post their own "Beat Watch" results as they filter in...
I don't know what is causing me more chagrin:
Falling out of the 100, or the loss of my share of John Kinsella's Sullivan Trophy.
Oh, well.
Congratulations to all my betters not to mention my worsers, plus guys like Mr. C who are primarily my betters but occasionally my worsers, that is, in distances approaching 4 or 5 yards.
Yep, some teams submit results at the last minute and split requests seem to always come in later as well.
Nice swimming BTW, Jim!!
Thank you, Leslie. I am happy with my season especially considering it being the last year in the AG. Much, much better than 5 years ago at 54.
Whew, it looks like most of my swims will stay in top ten. Guess I'll have to purchase the requisite body condom once the FINA legality rules shake out to stand a chance of making the list next year.
Aren't you the one with the cast on her leg. If so, you are swimming remarkably well under the circumstances. Right now, my Zones time in the 1650 makes me 9th based on Nats results. So, I am hoping that there are no "out of the blue times" that keep me out this year. I looked into further and based on last year's top ten in the 30-34 age group, the DB and the TT List were the same. Cross you fingers!
Fingers crossed. Yes, I have Das boot on. And yes, it has affected my kick a bit but not my wanting to be in the top ten. :)
Correct! I didn't do the 2:40 last year rest while the 2:10 was rested.
Wow - very impressive!!! Keep it up Tom.

Sorry Jim.

Jim,
You may me out of the 100 free and it still looks good for the 400 IM.

That is cool that you don't let it bother you. I don't let the fact that I have a non-swimmer's body affect my wanting a darn SCY top ten!!!
Thanks and Thanks!

I would have come in 10th at Nats, which might have squeaked me through, but it turns out that the legendary John Kinsella actually beat me in a meet that wasn't posted on the Top Times database. Thus...11th, 12th, or possibly even worse.
In terms of the 100, I may be hanging on by a thread, but this looks bad, too.
In the top times database before Nats, my CZ time (still unposted) would have put me in 7th place.
At Nationals, my CZ time would have placed 6th:...
Three of the above (Larry, Dean, and Donald) had not posted faster top times already, so they take their place ahead of me in line. That means that my 52.87 at CZ is now theoretically in 10th place in the 55-59 age group. But this assumes no other unposted results are out there waiting to jump in front of me, too.
Plus god only knows how many other guys who are now 54 are going to start training with ridiculous rapacity at the prospect of next year...
I don't know about the rest of you, but for me, a pattern is starting to emerge:
the first year I age up, I have a chance to make some Top Ten SCY times. The second year, it becomes nearly impossible. And after that, lordy...
Jim,
At the beginning of the season, I had figured that it would take a 52.50 or faster to place top ten in the 100 free. After your swim, I thought you might hang on but...
It's tenuous, at best, to be hanging onto a 10th place spot in a sprint event at the conclusion of Nat's, prior to the prelim TT coming out.
Pray hard and pray often.

I don't know about you, but this seems awfully fast. And next year, it's only going to become ridiculously fast. None of these five guys are moving up in the age group. However, plenty of speed demons from below are are, including:

Jim:
John P. Kinsella did a 5:18.74 in the 500 Free at the BIG DOG Masters Meet on 3-21-09 so I believe that moves you to 12th for now.
www.ilmsa.com/.../results and click on BIG DOG meet and you will see it. I believe you have to drop another 6 seconds to borrow the Sullivan trophy.
You are currently holding on to 10th in the 100 Free so that is good. I believe my highest was 12th but I am beginning my 4th week of Long Course Training and hope to get some Top Tens in LCM.
