Back to back meets

Anyone have experience swimming in meets on consecutive weekends? I've never done this myself, but am contemplating doing meets April 24-25 (Zones, SCY) and May 3 (SCM). Was planning to rest a week or so for Zones and then just keep resting. My main worry is that I'm usually pretty zonked for a few days after a two day meet. Is this a bad idea? Any advice? My main motivation to go to the second meet is that I'm not sure I'll get another SCM meet in this year. There are no local meets, and right now I have family conflicts with travel meets.
  • Go for it! Just keep resting. Where is the SCM meet? Might be up your way that weekend.
  • I already PMd you this(I hope you got it) but I'll post for everyone.I did back to back meets a few years ago a SCM and then a SCY.The SCM meet was more important to me so I did my regular taper for it.I didn't have a great meet for unknown reasons(though a 7 hr drive to the meet probably didn't help.)The next week I did my usual week before a meet work-warm up,a very little race pace just to keep the feel and the a long cool down.I had a great meet that time.Listen to your body and make sure you get lots of rest and sleep. Also,at the SCY meet I'd say don't overload your schedule. You have some fast times from earlier so don't feel like you must swim every thing. Also that would not be a good meet to find out if you really want to swim the 200 fly.

Got the PM! Thanks. Unfortunately, I'm pretty booked up at the SCY meet with relays and such -- another reason why I was worried about doing a back to back meet. My team is hosting and we try to make a run at the medium team championship. I will scratch individual events if I get tired. I'm unconcerned with my yard times. No worries about the 200 fly! I'll work on sleep. At the moment, I'm rather dead from a trip to the west coast last week.

I'll let you know on Monday. I swam PNA champs last Friday/Saturday. I signed up for 6 events, but in a rare moment of clarity/self preservation, fortuitously scratched the 200 free. I'm swimming 6 individuals and probably 4 relays this weekend for the Oregon champs. Swam through PNA, slacking off a little this week to get ready for our meet. Ours is in Bend, elevation 3,500 or so. I suffered mightily there from the altitude a couple of years ago, and the pain is still fresh in my mind.

I hope you do well this weekend. I wish I was there....
  • I did back to back in August. LCM Nats in Portland then LCM Zones. I swam only once in the week between, 2 days after getting back from Portland. As long as you can curb that inner endorphin junkie that you carry around with you, you should be fine. I would recommend that you swim no more than twice in the week between and those swims should be more recovery focused to flush out the fatigue and keep you nice and loose. And don't give up hope. There might be a SCM meet in November in the DC area :-)
  • Hi, Leslie. I did this last year--our Y 2-day meet, followed four days later by CZ. Most of my events, I did better at Zones, most likely because it's a better pool and not so hot as the temperature they keep it at Clarion U (the janitors seem to have control over the thermostat that not even the college coach can usurp.) Anyhow, both meets I swam the 1000, 500, 200, 100, and 50 freestyles. I was 3 secs slower in the 500 at Zones, I think partly from accumulated fatigue. I don't think that sprints would take quite so much a toll, especially if you make sure to restore all your nutrition, etc. Maybe the weight lifting community could offer a word here, given that all out swim sprints probably have more to do with anaerobic conditioning. To wit, if you do an all out dead lift on day 1, how long does it take your body to completely recover? I would imagine you would be fine in a couple days, assuming your body was used to dead lifts. But I don't know for sure. It would seem that whatever muscle fibers get torn in the process would have a chance to knit back even stronger with a week?
  • I do back-to-back meets quite a bit. Most recently swam the Albatross just 6 days after a local SCY meet. LCM zones always seems to be on the weekend after LCM nationals, so I've done that back-to-back as well. If you're doing a full taper for zones, then I would suggest doing just what Allen says. Short, warm-up/cool down swims during the week with just a bit of speed work. You'll still be riding your taper at the next meet. Keep up your feel for the water and don't overload yourself at the SCM meet. You and your cohort Michelina are meet goddesses. Think you're in better shape than me. No full taper for Zones. I'll probably be in the feeling like crap stage for that meet. If I can't overload myself, I guess the 50 *** will just HAVE to go. lol

What intelligence do you have about a Nov. SCM meet?! I keep suggesting that the Sprint Classic be meters one year, but it appears most folks are very attached to yards.
