I would love to see what kind of yardage some of you are doing out there. Just ball park numbers. I realize there is much more to swimming than how many yards one does, and training for different events entails differences in yardages, but I would still like to see what everyone is doing so I can know where I fall within the "norm". Also, if anyone knows, I would like to know what some of the masters All American's do as far as yardage. I see times for Jeff Commins in the *** and IM events and wonder how much he must train.

I write down all of my workouts. For 2008 I swam 168 workouts for a total of 487,150 yards. That averages to 2900 yds/workout.
I probably should have asked for everyones yardage as well as training goals and times they are producing with the yardage. I am curious to know if those who put in 20K are doing better/worse/same as those who put in 15K, 12K, 10K or less. I just recently moved from 6-8K per week to 12-14K and am swimming much faster times all around, but I am only putting in 4 days per week, which leaves me plenty of rest days for recovery. I really want to know if putting in another 4-6K per week would make me much faster or not.
I had considerable drops in times this fall when I increased the frequency of my swims and the overall weekly yardage (from 11k in the spring to 20k peak average for the 8 weeks leading up to my big meet). I focus principally on mid-distance free and IMs, but dropped times from the 50 up to the 800, and did well in open water swims from a mile up to 3 miles.
Like everything, there are "diminishing returns" on incremental yardage. I believe that I can continue to get faster this year by averaging 20K during my peak periods. I do supplement this with weights, core work and the occasional lunacy of running.
If I had more time to train, I think to really reach my (age adjusted) potential in my two target events (400 IM, 500 free), I would need to do:
5 to 6 swimming workouts a week, totally 25K to 30K with primary emphasis on technique and quality
3 full body weight lifting sessions per week
2 to 3 sessions of core work (e.g., strictly core, Pilates, yoga or some fusion thereof)
I see times for Jeff Commings in the *** and IM events and wonder how much he must train.
Don't forget my backstroke times!
I'm flattered that out of all the swimmers in USMS, you're curious how much I train.
I just got back in after a month off. For a couple of months, I'll be working on rebuilding my aerobic base. The workouts will be anywhere between 3,500 and 4,500, lasting about 70 minutes.
Around April, I will begin to focus on sprint training, and the distance swum per workout will change somewhat a focus on race-pace training.
I rarely think about how many yards/meters I swim. It doesn't matter. What matters is what you do in the water. If you feel the workout is "garbage yardage," work on technique. If the workout deals wih strokes, focus on your problem areas with each stroke. On race-pace days, think about race pacing.
I think in my case, and probably with many others, I'm making withdrawals from the many hours I spent in the pool from age 4 to 24.
I don't pay much attention to my daily yardage, I've been blogging workouts for the past almost 4 years and almost never total up daily yards.

Sep 2008 - now
I tend to focus on swimming FAST in practice.
I did total up yards on this workout because the total was unusually high for me 6k

My ______ workouts tend to be between _____ to _____
non taper: 4,000 to over 5,000,
speed training: 3,000 - 4,500
taper: 1,500 - 3,000
usually 6 times a week
probably do over 25,000 each week
I would say that I am swimming alot faster than when I was doing about 15K a week or less back in 2004 to 2005. Plus, my workouts are more intense today than in 2004 to 2005. But now, I have more stamina for the longer free events and 200 fly than I did back then.
Same here.
in 2008 I averaged 12,000m/week. 3 x90 min workouts.
Most in one week was 15,500. that was OW training
during the xmas break I took 2 weeks off from work, and swam with the kids. Swam ~43,200 total in 8 workouts. where my first was only 2200 and the last was only 3200 and a whopping 10,200 somewhere in the middle.
I'll be swimming roughly 12-15000 a week from now until June. then I am hoping to increase my time in the pool/lake. to get closer to 20,000
I'm on 12-15K now spread out over 6 days. I was probably doing less than 3K a week less than 6 months ago, but it is getting addictive and I feel weird on my day off. Funny to think how much that is over a year.
