I am just back from the SPMA meet where all the top finisher were wearing the latest generation tech suits, mostly B-70s(or were named Jeff Commings.)I have here to for been in favor of the suits, but now I am not so sure.First, they eliminate the old bench marks.I went my fastest 100m BR in 5 yr in my LZR,but it was only .3 sec faster than I did untapered 5 wk earlier in my first swim in the LZR.So was my swim good or not,I'm not sure. Also, instead of focusing on technique or pace I found myself ruminating over aspects of the suits, how many more swims did the suit have,is it the right size, was the reason I didn't get better results from my B-70 because it was too big?etc. The B-70 has somewhat mitigated the "too expensive, not durable" problem, but for how long.
Lets say a company comes up with a suit that is much faster, say 4 sec/100.Further that it is very expensive(say $1000) lasts 4 swims and is very hard to make so that quantities are always limited and the fastest way to get one is to bid up to $3000 on ebay. Now lets say your nemesis has one,or that getting one is your best chance to get TT or AA or a ZR or WR,or that your child is close to making JO cuts,or finally beating his/her nemesis etc. Is it worth it and where does it stop?
100% couldn't agree more.
There is no debate on any level that you will swim faster wearing a suit such as the B70 or LZR.
If you choose to compete and wish to be as fast as you possibly can be and have access to approved technology...but choose to not use and believe you will be just as fast if not faster without it...then yes you qualify as an "idiot"...whether your in the pool, on your bike, in your car, on the track of flying a plane it's all the same.
Again, so you're saying that Phelps is an idiot?!?!?!?!

This post qualifies as two things:
A - well written and true, word
B - endorsement of the multi-sport lifestyle

Geek will be happy! We're back to idiots and dipdongs.
TJ, Phelps wore a LZR, just not a full body one in his longer events. So he's not an idiot.

Only half an idiot since he only wore half a suit?:agree:
Again, so you're saying that Phelps is an idiot?!?!?!?!
He wore an LZR legskin and he wore a full body LZR...did you have blinders on during the Olympics or are you just being an idiot?? :)

Smith is cranky, rush him a tin of SPAM, stat!
Idiot
It's obvious that he didn't want to go as fast as possible because he didn't wear the full body LZR for all of his races. He's half an idiot. He might have won the 100 fly by .02 if he had worn more than a legskin!
Come to think of it, I may have only dreamed that I watched the Olympics!

He was using the very best technology for the event and his body type...few people who have used legskins and a full body suit for fly races will argue that the full body is very restricting and for some people (Phelps) they will determine thru testing that it is actually slower. Do you honestly think every single aspect of his swims weren't fully tested using a wide range of suits in meets/workouts to determine what will work best?
The full body is not the question here as I recall...its technology in general. If he had been wearing a brief for all his races you might have an argument...idiot!

Whatever. Dipdong!:)
