I am just back from the SPMA meet where all the top finisher were wearing the latest generation tech suits,mostly B-70s(or were named Jeff Commings.)I have here to for been in favor of the suits,but now I am not so sure.First,they eliminate the old bench marks.I went my fastest 100m BR in 5 yr in my LZR,but it was only .3 sec faster than I did untapered 5 wk earlier in my first swim in the LZR.So was my swim good or not,I'm not sure.Also,instead of focusing on technique or pace I found myself ruminating over aspects of the suits,how many more swims did the suit have,is it the right size,was the reason I didn't get better results from my B-70 because it was too big?etc.The B-70 has somewhat mitigated the "too expensive,not durable" problem,but for how long.
Lets say a company comes up with a suit that is much faster,say 4 sec/100.Further that it is very expensive(say $1000) lasts 4 swims and is very hard to make so that quantities are always limited and the fastest way to get one is to bid up to $3000 on ebay. Now lets say your nemesis has one,or that getting one is your best chance to get TT or AA or a ZR or WR,or that your child is close to making JO cuts,or finally beating his/her nemesis etc. Is it worth it and where does it stop?
...I don't see how breaking a record through mechanically aided swimming is a personal accomplishment. :confused:

Yeah, I guess the laws of physics and hydrodynamics (pertaining to increased propulsion efficiency) don't apply to USMS swimmers -unless they are using a tech suit with their "magical" properties.

You apparently didn't read the comments posted by a few of the Top Swimmers on this board, that said exactly what Patrick stated.
Don't count on it. Many experienced swimmers, including some of the top USMS swimmers, actually go slower with paddles on.

I don't claim any type of accomplishment or spending status. However, I do know that in order to accomplish something you actually have to do it. This is contrary to your motto which is you just have to talk about something to claim to be accomplished. You seemed to have skipped over the whole "participation" aspect of the sport.
But, it's nice to see you finally admit to not being a swimmer, which makes me wonder why you bother with this forum.

I actually do go lap & fitness swimming practically every week and I assist with a Masters group in my city.
Using your line of reasoning, I guess that all the "Monday morning quarterbacks" (people chatting around the water cooler about the weekend NFL game) shouldn't be talking since they aren't really participants.
By the way, I'm going to go out this weekend and buy a pair of paddles. According to FINA rules they aren't a legal aid, but I definitely will be able to swim much faster.

By the way if it is your attitude that using an expensive tech suit is any accomplishment, you are not really a swimmer, you are simply a big spender. :2cents:

Funny you should mention this. I was watching the SEC's last night and thinking of the Smith twins and all of the "lost scholarships to foreign swimmers" thread (or whatever that one was called).
Seemed like all (far and away the majority of, at least) the interviews with "winners" were with non-US born swimmers.

Make sure your paddles have a #1 on them. They are for beginners so you don't blow out your shoulders.
People who do swim fast with paddles are REALLY strong, and usually don't have shoulder issues.
