Seeing people out of context at meets

Have any of you ever been at a meet and seen someone who, say, you've seen in a professional mode, say, for example, crying into kleenex in their office over your life trials, and suddenly you see this same person at a swim meet in a Speedo? And they are in your heat or close to your heat? So there's no way of being subtly invisible, which is your deepest heart's desire? Is there any way I can ban these people (two, now!) from *my* meets and *my* happy place? My only other thought is I must definitely leave them in the dust, race-wise.
  • You need 6 and that lake is f****in' cold!!! You'll freeze your *** off. But if you need someone to fill a team, I can be bribed. Fort's in. I've heard it is wet suit illegal, part of the challenge. Isn't Tahoe pretty clear?

My doctor was a teammate, and of course we competed together quite a bit. He also performed my vasectomy after the birth of brat #2. Fortunately, I was on the DARE program (Drugs Are Really Excellent) at the time, and my lasting memories of the procedure are reasonably pleasant ones. He ended up moving to Botswana (hence the past tense); hope my procedure and/or I didn't have anything to do with that. Living in a small, sports-nutty town, I see professional folks engaged in all manner of contexts (skiing, mountain biking, windsurfing, kiting, drunkbowling, etc. etc. etc.) and no one seems to give it a second thought. And I actually preferred my doc being a swimmer.

Geek- when did you get a portable swimming pool?

I kept seeing the Geek at swim meets in his Speedo. I would post the picture again but Jim won't allow it. I finally had to move to Texas ("Come for the barbeque, stay for the angioplasty"). Life is good.
  • You are officially on my approved list. I want to do this swim before I die. Fort has also committed to doing it with me, just need two more. I loathe distance, open water, cold water, and I'd probably get hypothermia for the lack of wetsuit but I seriously could be talked into this just because it's Tahoe.

Don't make fun of Stud crying into a Kleenex over his 6:00 200 free. We try to be supportive on this forum. Don't be a hater. You just being at a meet "out of context!"
  • Chris, why don't you be the 6th person? Then our team can consist of half UNC alums. :applaud: I'm willing in theory; it all depends on the timing. And on getting permission from She Who Must Be Obeyed , who is already grumbling about the number of swim meets/events I travel to. Then again, I wasn't picked for the Chesapeake Bay Swim lottery :bitching:, so this could take its place...
  • How far would each leg be and HOW cold is the water? This sounds like it might be interesting.
  • How far would each leg be and HOW cold is the water? This sounds like it might be interesting. www.usms.org/.../articleofthemonth.php Mid-60s in the summer pretty much squares with my recollection. Even in the summer, morning temperatures can easily be in the 40s or colder (feels MUCH colder in the shade than in sunlight, as is typical for CA/NV). I remember reading about the "Mighty Mermaids" doing this in our LMSC newsletter, they took 30 minutes shifts: www.vaswim.org/.../SeptWebsite.pdf
  • How far would each leg be and HOW cold is the water? This sounds like it might be interesting. The water temp is low 60's usually, although it's a bit warmer right at the surface. Unless it's changed, 6 person team swims 30 min. each, then 15 min. each then 10 minute shifts until finish. Each team has to have a boat.
