We were goofing around after practice the other day and decided to see who could swim the farthest underwater. We both went well over 50 meters (the underwater turn was a killer). I opted for dolphin kicking a ways and then switched to the underwater breastroke. I’m not sure which technique is better for distance as opposed to speed. Anyone out there ever make a full 100m underwater? Oh yeah, this can be dangerous because a lot of people pass out. So if you make an attempt, be sure someone is on deck watching you. Perhaps some of you dorks could even put on your competitions suits and monofins and see if it improves your performance. You guys kill me with all your equipment.
Most people don't have a problem holding their breath for 30 to 60 seconds, and could probably go a bit further than that if necessary. It's once a person deprives themselves of oxygen for a couple of minutes that they're headed for trouble.
I swam 100m no breath with a monofin this morning
I'm glad you survived. I hope everyone understands the risk of shallow water drowning. I can't believe this thread got resurrected.
My team does underwater kicking sometimes at the end of practice, but we never go over 25 yards and with plenty of rest between swims. 25 yards without breathing is plenty for me.
Yeah... I pride myself on my underwater work in the confines of the rules, but I see no reason to push much further than a 25 underwater. From a breath control perspective in general, I don't see the point of working toward anything more than a 50 no breath, and then only if you are a sprinter and trying to get those extra few tenths from not breathing in the 50.
Nobreath swims can improve 50 fr time, it is stated such training should be done with a spotter. I always ask someone to watch before attempting 50m nb, just in case. During a 50 fr event if you pass out before touching the pad, it is almost impossible not to be noticed within seconds.
The topic of underwater swims for distance is different. It doesn’t seem to fall under this thread discussion category
I will go a 50m free no breathe at least once a week. This is more of a moderate speed drill than a see how far I can go. I use these to work on efficient strokes and focusing on not over-exhaling on the flip turn. It's not something I'm interested in doing to see how far as I don't think it proves much.
