For those of you who have always wanted to win an open water swimming event, I have discovered the key:
1. invent a new race
2. establish a registration price of $29.95 to weed out anyone who is not serious
3. decide on a personal whim when to hold the event
4. publicize the event, through word of mouth, five minutes before the race starts
Using these techniques, I am proud to report that I not only won the 55-59 age group for men but came in #1 overall, besting every other man, woman, child, and piece of floating detritus in the field. No one, and I mean NO ONE, even came close.
PS I plan to be holding the event again next year, around the same time (i.e., a couple days before or after my birthday), so if anyone is in Ocean City New, Jersey at the beginning of Libra, consider signing up.
You can PM me for an address to mail your $29.95 registration fee.
Where did you get the strength to finish that amazing swim. Cogratulations was the water wet???
I am going to run a Marathon Race in Mexico and have the same amount of contestants. I am quite confident that I will win. The winner is going to get a happy hour Margarita.
Tom, George, and Leslie,
I suspect you have already mailed in your registration fees for next year's race, and I will be looking forward to the competion. I am pretty sure we are all different ages and genders; Tom and George male, Leslie female, and me something in between, but not so far in between that I would have to compete against Kristina.
I add this just so as to help me know how many ribbons I need to purchase for the award ceremony. Do not think the $29.95 registration fee is somehow pure profit for me. Between the skyrocketing cost of ribbons, I will be lucky to not have to take out a second mortgage to run this event.
But I do it because I love the sport, and I think it's important that we still have some events not regulated by FINA to keep their arrogance under control (and possibly trigger a substantial buyout proposal from their legal department.)
Train hard!
An excellent suggestion, George. Now we just have to figure out how to prevent Kristina from swimming nonstop all five days and winning every trophy.
Good luck on your Mexican Marathon. My money is on you, though I am not sure yet whether I should go for the win, place, or show ticket.
By the way, where in Mexico do you go? Have you ever made it to San Miguel de Allende? Great little town, or at least it was in 1984.
You could have a 5 day swim and let each entry swim the event individually.
Have a George Swim on Monday and George Can Get the Monday Trophy.
Have a Leslie Swim on Tuesday and Leslie can get the Tuesday Trophy.
Have a Tom Swim on Wednesday and Tom can get the Wednesday Trophy.
Have a Kristine Swim on Thursday and Leslie can get the Thursday Trophy.
Have a Jim Swim on Friday and Jim can get the Friday Trophy.
Saturday the presentation Day, Margaritas all around.
Leonard, I know that people doubt I have a twin brother, but I really do. Libby Ellen Spooner is one of John's characters, not mine! You might get a kick out of these two John movies, as well:
