i would bet that many of the medications prescribed to this ageing demographic (for daily quality of life factors) would trigger red flags at the international level of elite competition. pseudoephedrine hydrochloride anyone? the first round is on me.
  • Give me a break. We train year round, some of us waking up at 4:30 am every day to get to practice. We invest time and money traveling to swim meets. We buy expensive technical suits. We worry about our tapers. We experiment with dry land routines and cross training. And we spend too much time on this forum arguing with other people who are similarly obsessed. You, Mr. Smith, are not being honest with yourself when you say that it's "just" masters swimming. I do beleive that while Masters swimming is important to the participants, there is not much (or even any) in the way of financial gain to be had thru setting Masters records. Or at least at a SIGNIFICANTLY reduced scale compared to Olympic success.
  • Sure go ahead and do it, but not as a part of general USMS dues. Either include it in the meet fees, or have some special, "Top 10," fee. Why should the majority have to pay for something that a very small minority uses? While I do wake up at 5:00 AM about 5x a week to swim, I treat swimming as a stress release. There's far bigger things that stress my life, and I don't need swimming creating stress.
  • Mr. Smith doth protest too much. Just because you're old, doesn't mean you stop caring about things. In most cases, you are simply forced to balance. For master cheats, I dont see money as the primary motivator. I believe its more likely the competitive "win at all costs" mentality combined with a good dose of ego. I acknowledge though that are a very who do make money.
  • I acknowledge though that are a very who do make money. And that is the heart of the reason why testing is a waste of resources. The cost would not be worth it in light of the potential monetary gain that a 'cheater' would garner.
  • It's just masters swimming. Face it, if someone is using illegal PEDs (growth hormone or whatever) they're even more pathetic than if they are cheating in the real thing.... i.e. USA Swimming. Besides...... what makes us think that drug testing in masters would be any more accurate or reliable than drug testing in USA Swimming? Smart users don't get caught. It would be a waste of time and money. John Smith You are so full of crap....your just worried that you'd have to ditch your inhaler which is the ONLY way you beat me in the 50...except for that rolling back on my heels at the start.
  • Jeez - better ditch the medical marijuana! Not quite sure this qualifies as "performance enhancing", but you might end up with a DEA agent standing over you at the end of the lane instead of a timer!
