I'll start with a panoramic photo of the pool.
I took this Sunday during the women's 50 back. You can't see it at this resolution, but Julie Oplinger's name is on the readout board in the even (righthand) course.

Actually they were. The reason they appear different is this was stitched together from probably five separate photos.
Gotcha. Makes sense. My other thought had been "the pace clocks are _close_... but not exact." I did notice that the two most to the right were the same, and found it strange that if two were synced, why the others wouldn't be. But a stitched photo explains it!

* Only one stroke/turn official at the turn end for backstroke?
