Caps on boys

I grew up simming in the late 60s through early 80s. Boys didn't really wear caps then. My son is 11 and is teatering on some USA Swimming state qual times, but is about 0.5 seconds away in several 50s and 100s. He has never tried a cap. Should he? I would think a cap would only take about .01 seconds off a 50. Does anyone have any data.
  • I always kept my hair short and shaved my head for big meets. I tried a few times to wear a cap, but I could never get use to the feeling of having my ears pinned back, or water would get into my right ear. I only wear caps now in open water races since you have too, but keep my ears on the outside...

Men swimming with caps? Men wearing full body suits? Men swimming with long finger nails? Women swimming with enormous muscles? Am I the only one that thinks that pretty soon all swimmers will be named Pat or Chris and have the same appearance? Uh yeah. We're already at that stage - and beyond. And add to that women with lots of body hair (unshaved) and women with full body (and very unflattering at that) suits. I swear, I'm going to switch to beach volleyball just based on gear and body type alone. Having my hair in a ponytail with "Coors Light" on my rear is sooooo much more appealing than a full bodysuit and cap!
