Potential shoulder injury advice...

So, I was out playing Ultimate Frisbee this evening. I felt it pop when I threw a long backhand. It now hurts to lift my arm to the front. I am icing it 20 on and 20 off and took some Aleve. I guess I'll just have to wait until tomorrow to see how it feels, but I'm pretty sure it's injured. I have been training for Zones for 6 months now and I am not sure of how to feel. I'm angry with myself for going out to play Ultimate, I'm scared that I'm not going to be able to swim at Zones. Argggggh!:bitching::bitching::bitching::bitching::bitching::bitching::bitching::bitching::bitching: I will try to get an appointment with a shoulder guy on short notice. I'm hoping that some of you have some advice. I read the shoulder poll, so I know there are some of you with firsthand knowledge.
  • Not sure what a "pop" means. Could be slight tear or just a nasty strain from a ballistic movement. Go to the doc. To find a tear, you will need an arthrogram, not just a regular MRI though. Do you have a good chiropractor who could take a look at it? How do you feel this am? Any better? If you have more mobility and are not in hideous pain, you can do some drills and kicking at the pool.
  • Do you have a good chiropractor who could take a look at it? I wanted to suggest this (as I am a Chrio) but was afraid, since the post the other day chiro v PT. I would also stronly advise visiting a Chiro - you will most likely be referred for imaging, but can begin pain management (acupuncture is available is great) as well as tissue healing activities. Whatever you did, it didn't happen as a result of lack of PAIN KILLERS ans MUSCLE RELAXERS! Your treatment will be expedited going straight to a Chiro, vs referral city through the MD grapevine. (Nothing against MD's AT ALL....just able to work alot faster) :wiggle: Yes!! I love my chiro/ART doc. He diagnosed the tearing in the labrum when my ortho did not (from sclerotogenous pain I was having in my trap area). ART helped pretty quickly. I never stopped swimming or competing either. Plus, if it's a muscle issue not a tear, ART docs are really good with soft tissue work.

Yikes! Who knew frisbee was so dangerous!! Sounds like a muscle tear to me, most likely rotator cuff - hopefully mild! Is it selling alot? You are definately right to ICE ICE ICE, try to get in with someone asap. Good luck Katy

Glad to hear it! I had a similar experience when I was 16 - swimming about a million yards a week for the 10th year in a row, and wound up with excrutiating low bacak pain. MD said it was a strain and sent me to PT. Was out of the water for several weeks in and off with no improvement. I was finally convinced to see a DC by a family friend, and was about 80% after a few treatments. Turned out it was actually a degenerative condition from swimming, and was underdiagnosed by my PCP. Glad to hear you have a great Doctor!!
  • So, a visit to the orthopedist on Friday alleviated my fears. X-rays and strength tests seemed to make him certain that I only strained some tendons. Most likely, the biceps tendons. Although he did say that I needed to come up with a better story than frisbee for the cause of my injury.:toohurt: I am still sore and certain motions cause a fair amount of pain, but I am hoping that a return to the pool for a couple more tapering workouts will work the kinks out. I am getting fired up for my first ever Zone Championships. Thanks for the advice.
