After seeing a woman break 24 seconds and I think we can stop the discussion of "IF" the LZR suit is faster and start thinking "how much faster".
The previous line of suits (Fastskin and so on) were pretty similiar to a shaved swimmer. Sure - they do feel like they make you float, but overall the times seemed to move along "in line" with what I would expect to see in terms of improvements in the sport. If the previous suits would have been that much faster than shaving, you would have never seen people just using the legskins. By the way - for us Masters swimmers there was always the added benefit of keeping in all the "extra layers of skin".
So how much faster are the LZR suits ?
If I had to guess based on the results so far, I would say 0.25 to 0.30 per 50 and double that for the 100. I can see the Bernard going 48 low in the 100 and I can see Sullivan getting close or just breaking the 50 record. It makes sense that Libby Lenton would swim a 24.2 or so in the 50.
I think one of the top regular teams out there should do a test - you need a good amount of world class swimmers training together to be able to do a test. Here is the test I would propose:
8-10 swimmers
2 days of testing
4x50 on 10 minutes all out
Day 1 - swim 2 with a Fastskin2 followed by 2 with the LZR
Day 2 - swim 2 with the LZR followed by 2 with the Fastskin2
Get the averages of all 10 swimmers - maybe drop the high and low and there you go.
Why do the test ? I would HAVE to know. Swimming is a big part of your life and you just set a massive PR using this new technology - my very first question would be " How much was me and how much was the suit?"?
That's cuz you're tall and skinny. But go ahead and sacrifice that precious .001. Just means I'll get you in the 50 back on Saturday. Hehehe.
who cares about saturday? i'm not even close to rested (much less tapered!) it's all about who's faster in austin! regardless of age, height, suit, inside or outside lane...

True! So no byatching about times! :P
I've only started resting a bit. BUT I still don't want to get beat on Saturday, though Yana will likely whomp us all. Plus, an old nemesis in my age group has returned to competing, and I refuse to lose!
I guess we've got a gridge on for Nats then. What's your best time? 29.6? Lower? Mine's 29.8. It'll be a good race.
The watchwords for today are: "planned and perceived obsolescence."
That was clearly the contemplated intent with the Pro. But one wonders if they may have a dreaded plateau after the Olympic year LZR. How are they going to beat lightweight girdles?
Am I the only one who thinks there's something wrong with FINA evaluating their sponsors' products?
No you are not.
As for the debate about standardizing suits I think it would be better to look at standardizing materials and construction instead. I don't think the problem is the amount of coverage as much as getting into technology like the LZR corset and neoprene panels. As an example, you could just restrict the material to regular lycra fabric. The price would be reasonable and you wouldn't end up with four teams all smashing the 4x200 world record, some by more than 7 seconds.
Interestingly, the Dutch winners in the 4x200 relay were wearing the new Tyr suits, so maybe at least one other manufacturer was not left in the dust.
Sheesh Ian, totally uncalled for swipe at British Columbians, highly ionic.
Peter,
Anyone who has been to BC knows I was being polite.....
And yes, I sometimes miss those ionian winds that used to blow through this forum.
Ian.
Continuing along this line of thinking:
...--Cyclists would all be required to ride the same model of bicycle, wear the same style of helmet, and wear the same jerseys and shorts...
That actually did happen in the Tour De France; up until 1935 they all had to have the same machines, and they were provided by the organizer. Since the tour was run over lumpy gravel roads, the competitors were probably quite happy with that.
Let's extrapolate: the next great swimsuit will be SO ADVANCED that it will either fall apart while it is being put on, or else in mid-race. Cue the emoticon: :drown: The popularity of swimming as a spectator sport will skyrocket! NASA scientists are working around the clock even as we speak.
And the following one will be sprayed on and as it dries, it will shrink, thus constraining the body and constricting it (Hey, they might call it the "boa") and it will time-auto-disintegrate according to the formula of the spray.
If your coach sets the spray nozzle for a 15 mins period, you'd better do your 1500m free in under 15 mins or ...............
Cheers

No, in fact you hit the nail squarely on the head with that post. Having FINA evaluating their sponsors' products is akin to having Dracula guard the blood bank---
