Preparing for the 100 IM at Masters Nationals in May has lead me to think about the exchange between Backstroke and Breastroke. How can USA Swimming (and Masters) further bend over to pressure in the sport for additional speed and record breaking.
I propose that one be allowed to flip from back to *** on an IM by rolling over on to your stomach (like a normal backstroke turn or freestyle turn) and push off on your stomach for your pullout without touching the wall (with your hand).
This could cut as much as a half second off the race. I mean whats the point in touching the wall anymore? We don't do it on backstroke.
Besides, aren't rules made to be broken if its in favor of making the sport faster and breaking records..... :-)

I just look a look at about 10 starts from men's non-backstroke events in the 2004 Olympics and about 3M (10 feet) is where the entry point is. The solid lane line markers denote the 5M mark and everyone is entering well short of it. And those would be presumably the best in the world. I would think that getting that another meter out would be possible if a sacrifice of entry speed is made but that still leaves it short of the 5meter mark.
Please post this video on Youtube so we all can see it.

Paul I think you are right: I looked at the viedo again and I am probably two feet from the end of the solid marker. Is the 5M standard for yard pools too? My dive may have been even shorter than I thought! Anyhow, I will look into getting on to youtube because Ande is in the clip for about half a second and he is kind of a celeb around here.
I need to shorten the video to upload it. Anyhow, anyone know: are flags marked at 5 yards or 5 meters in a 25 yard pool (college format)?
Not sure about college rules but for USMS it's 5m for meter pools and 5y for yard pools. Rule 107.13.2 www.usms.org/.../part1.pdf
that would be good
why don't we throw in
3) flip turns on ***
it is legal. And seen it used. The girl who won Sectionals a few years back used them. Then of course are whole team proceeded to try it in the warm down pool and realized we were not as efficient at it. I think it takes alot of skill, timing, practice and also she had some freakishly long arms that allowed her to touch the wall before flipping. She did beat the close second place girl on the turns, though!
We're lookin' for genuine cheating alternatives...... i.e. ways to go faster without extra training or talent.

How about subcontracting "your" performance out?
Instead of starting blocks,we could start from diving boards with a running start. Also, instead of limiting SDK to 15M for safety let swimmers carry oxygen tanks.Heck, they have monofin races in Europe(some with O2 tanks.) Or to get really fast times we could eliminate stroke and turn judges entirely and if you want to turn in the center of the pool to get a record it is on your conscience.
Now, if we want to increase speed generally we could eliminate breaststroke altogether which would bring the average speed up at meets, and reduce the timeline.
Stop picking on Stud. That's just mean.
OK. I'll bite. Hit on the sites below. The turn I have described in the past is illustrated. Top arm, body roll, side push. The only problem, it is legal and was designed in the early 70's. So it ain't cheatin.
