Respect for competitive swimmers.

I wasn't a competitive swimmer growing up, I come from a running background and it wasn't until I got into triathlon and open water swimming did I really train and compete, but nothing near the level of many of you on this forum. Sadly swimming doesn't get the respect or attention as other more mainstream sports in the US, but I know many young swimmers at the high school and collegiate level and know very well how dedicated they are and the crazy amount of training they do. The ironic thing is that as intense a lifestyle it can be, you all are a very happy, funny bunch that seem to really love your sport. I was watching a few interviews from the FINA Grand Prix from Long Beach, Calif., and everyone they interviewed laughed, giggled, joked around, got nervous or embarrassed when complimented and just seemed to be enjoying themselves. This is a really nice departure from the millionaire pro athletes with over inflated egos and their constant chest pounding. I greatly look forward to the summer Olympics every 4 years just to watch the swimming events. So though it may seem like no one gives you credit for you hard work, I have more respect for competitive swimmers than any other athletes.

Well I figure it couldn't be any worse than some of the current "so far from reality" shows on the tube these days. Right now the best and only reality show I watch is Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe. Guys hilarious. Sorry if my enthusiasm is a little over the top, after numerous years in the AC casino industry, and having worked for one of Philly's most well known motivational personalities, Pat Croce, I just get a little overzealous at times.

It would actually be very cool to follow an Olympic hopeful leading up to the games, not a bad idea at all. Thanks... My whole life I've been thinking about ways to improve the swimming brand. The Olympic reality show is pretty simple, and I've thought of many more ideas. One of those includes the link in my signature, what do you think about that?

WOW I want you on our team!! Who? Thetodd, or me?
  • How about a reality show of an Olympic year training cycle...? Ask, and ye shall receive. From the Sports Illustrated Sign of the Apocalypse (page 18 of the Feb 18 issue): "NBC is planning a curling reality show, hosted by Bruce Springsteen and Jon bon Jovi, on which contestants will vie for a spot on the 2010 Olympic Team." How exciting! Or were you thinking of some other sport? (Confession: I actually really did enjoy watching curling during the last winter Olympics.)

I don't think people watch a sport because of how hard the people train, training hard gets you respect, not an audience. The problem with swimming is that it is pretty simple, much like a running race, who gets to the finish line first? Most popular sports are team sports with games/matches that last an hour or more, not 21 seconds or 1:43. Personality is icing on the cake, not the main course.

Also, personality is what built the entertainment industry.

I'm not talking about the semantics of the link, I'm talking about the content it provides. ~The idea of using an Olympian to promote full market value for the sport by investing in networking capabilites.~ Money is not about what we take, it's about what we create.

(Confession: I actually really did enjoy watching curling during the last winter Olympics.)So did I. The curling talk forums probably have an on-going thread about no respect. :)
  • Picking the right swimmers for the reality show is key. Put Gary Hall Jr in front of a camera 24-7 and I bet you'd get some interesting film.
