Spitting in opponent's lane

I recently heard that a woman swimmer, unnamed, on the elite level, has been known to spit in her opponent's lane before a sprint race. Is this just ill-mannered pscyhing or something more sinister? I read on one of Gary Hall Jr.'s race club blogs that this might be a technique for getting a competitor to test positive for steroids or other drugs. This has a somewhat Urban Legend quality to it that causes my spider sense to tingle. Nevertheless, I am wondering if the more knowledgable folks on the forum might have an explanation for the strategic use of spittle.

So from the article that Frank posted, AVD "Before her races, she spits, growls, stares, and splashes. She freely admits that she's out to scare her opponents, to beat them mentally before leaving them to flounder in her wake. Ask her to describe herself and she'll use words like mean and stubborn." So basically, she just acts like a man.

The only sound response would be to return the favor...after a throat clearing, phlegm generating growl of course.

Yes but that could be the anticpated reaction...something unexpected is needed when you get something unexpected...peeing on her feet or something...yeah it's all disgusting but if you're gonna start... It reminds me of when I used to play football nothing beat eating pungent food the night before a game and gassing your marker when he tried to get tight during the game in the morning... I guess you could do this too around your opponent's block, but really is masters worth such behaviour? I think Masters should have some sense of maturity towards clean and fair competitions.

I just don't like to see those slimmy honkers. What is the diferrence when I swim everything I have in my nose, mouth, etc goes in my lane. I feel sorry for any one that swims in the same lane after I swim in it. Now does anyone want to circle swim in my lane???

Good ideas. I think it would be much more rewarding to win the race, and then spit in your opponents lane as they stare at you in disbelief.
  • What a brilliant idea! I'm gonna try this out next time I practice. Just snort and hawk a big one in the water walkers and noodlers lane, heh heh.
  • Just because she in a fast heat does not make her top class!:shakeshead:
