Wetsuits at Meets?!

Are wetsuits legal at meets?! A swimmer was spotted in a wetsuit before the 400 IM at my meet this week. Seems like a lot of float ...

I didn't swim the 400 IM. She didn't beat me; I beat her in our couple common events. Sweet! Way to go. How on earth does one swim 400 IM in a wetsuit? I've really only seen people do freestyle in 'em. Must be one heck of a crazy breaststroke.

If folks are going to start donning the wetsuits at USMS meets, we've lost the battle to the tris. We need to stand united against this. ...and as the 3rd horseman of the apocalypse crests the hill in the distance...I must say I agree with Geek. The time to address it is when you see it...can't prove anything now. To raise the issue to officials now looks like sour grapes...even if it is no bearing on any of your own races. There is nothing wrong with venting and discussing here though.

I thought that in USAS one only had a certain amount of time to contest a race. Course, masters is a very different animal as I've found.

Keep in mind the "current top times" list can include multiple swims by the same individual, so it isn't unusual to move up from your position on that list. Obviously. However, these were not multiple swims by the same swimmers that were thrown out. These girls vanished totally. The swims took place at nationals. So I doubt that the measurement of the pool was an issue.

I don't see how you could do a flip turn in a wetsuit. I think I tried it last summer while practicing in open water, it didn't work.

Let's just say that there's not much SDK going on. That's exactly the area where I can either make up for lost time or get ahead when racing said person with wetsuit.

I would like to do a 50 free LCM in a wetsuit just to see the time difference. Maybe when my current wetsuit gets old I'll take it in the pool as an experiment. I would do this discretely, at a practice with few people present so I wouldn't have to suffer much verbal abuse.

also re: top ten, if meet results include non-USMS swimmers and those meet results are added to the current top times, when the top ten is published, the non-USMS swimmers are removed. for example, if a :canada: master would come to a meet south of the border (ie here in the states :) ), they would probably be in the current top times, but wouldn't count in the final top ten times. unless they were registered with USMS. but i don't think you can register with both organizations... Great point. I'm *guessing* that could be the case in this situation. But who knows.

They weren't wearing wet suits by any chance, were they? :joker: :rofl: Yep. It was Shamu in a wetsuit actually.

I'm pretty sure only USMS members are allowed to swim at Nationals. Anyone can swim at Nationals, as long as they are registered members of a Masters swimming organization (NGB). There are usually a fair number of Canadians at our Nationals. Anna Lea
