Goggles

Question: I am having a problem with finding the perfect goggles. They either leak, scratch, or I can't seem to adjust them properly. The last resort came when I bought a pair of TYR hydrovision goggles that seemed to fit perfectly, and were advertised as antifog, and UVB protected. Fog appeared pretty quickly, so I took them off, and tried to wipe them clean with my suit, then later a towel. Now that lens is all scratched up. No one ever told me that one can't clean these plastic lenses? Anyone else have problems like this? Sylvia:doh:

I used to wear Tyr Technoflex and was constantly replacing them because they scratched up on the inside... apparently I have abrasive eyelashes. Then either my eye sockets changed or their molds did, they didn't fit any more. After trying a few different types I settled on Speedo Hydrospex. They don't scratch nearly as easily and they pass the dry face test, which is where you press the lenses up against your eye sockets without actually putting on the straps and see if there is any suction when you take them away again. If there is, they're a good fit and not as likely to leak. Buying from a shop that lets you try them on is a big time and money saver in the long run, if you can find such a place. If you're in the western provinces of Canada any time in the future, the Swimco chain is good for that. (NAYY)

I have "Feldman" type buggy eyes... and no it is not my thyroid, just a fact, when I try on standard goggles, my eye hits the inside of the goggle, feels really wierd and uncomfortable. Have used many masks, and the best so far is the wired Barracuda mask.. It is very big however, look like a scuba diver more than a swimmer. ....anyone know of anything in between? thanks in advance. Oh. and spit works the best at anti fog that I have found.
  • I"m back asking questions about goggles. Any new ideas on leakproof ones?

My 9 year old son and I both LOVE Speedo Vanquishers - they are lightweight and they don't leak on either of us. He had a major problem with goggles coming off when diving in...I couldn't find any that "felt right". It's different for everyone, but once you find a style you like, stick with them...
  • I still wear the Speedo ultravision. They've been discontinued. I picked up a case of them in closeout from a Canadian vendor. (For awhile, they were available only in Canada... but then were discontinued there.) -Rick
  • the Aquashere are good and so are the Speedo Hydrospex. It it hard to find good goggles when you have big eyes. I can't fit my big eyes in those Swedish goggles. Speedo had this goggles that I loved but they discontinued them. I was devastated until I discovered the Aquashere. Plus, no more nose marks.

I have Barracudas and while they don't leak at all while swimming, the bands will move around unless I get them juuuust right. I don't know how they would fare in a diving situation since I'm not competing at this time. They have not scratched a bit, after a month of use. I can recommend them for practices anyway. As for fogging, I have used the anti-fog drops and don't see much of a difference from spit.

I use the large Aqua Sphere ..... for practice, when not diving into pool. I have some smaller goggles for competition, but usually end up swimming without any for the meet. When I go to the pool I take about three goggles with me in case one gets fogged up during practice. I also take my anti fog spray. Ditto although I have dived using the Aqua Sphere (Seal and XP). They stayed on during the dive but I don't like that they both have a small ridge on top which creates quite a bit of resistance (drag) when diving or pushing off. (I compensate by inclining my head forward a few degrees more than normal angle for diving and pushing off.) I usually take six or seven different goggles. Some days, some will fit more hermetically than a Nasa Sealed Chamber, other days it will have to be another one or use a sieve for eye protection. Instead of anti-fog spray, I find that a quick rinse in Baby Shampoo does the trick. (It's also helpful when resting at turns and a beautiful lady swimmer says, "I smell Baby Shampoo." There's an opener.........)

Thanks for the ideas. I still haven't heard from anyone re: recommendations on how to clean the inside lenses. Is this a no no? Baby Shampoo before each swim.
