Tremendous swim!
Wonder how Janet's taking the news.
My box seats were right next to Janet's box at the 2004 Trials, so I got to know her (and her mom, husband and friends) a little better. Janet is a champion, and the record is certainly part of who she is. I'm sure she had mixed feelings about the 1500 record - sad to see it go, but happy for Zeigler and USA Swimming.

I agree, Bill. I think she said something similar to this when her 400 free record was broken.
Of course, she would be feeling bad that it is broken. Even if the "records are made to be broken" adage is true, it is an accomplishment that definitely becomes a part of you in the public eye, and you feel a sense of ownership in the record.
I watched Brendan Hansen and Patrick Fowler take down my 15-16 and 17-18 100 *** national age group records in the same race at nationals in 1998. I felt heaviness in the pit of my stomach because I was damn proud of breaking those records and having them last so long (six and seven years) But knowing that Patrick continued to do well in college, and, well, we know about Brendan, so it's not that bad now.
I still have the state high school record in Missouri for the 100 ***, and I get nervous every year (it's lasted 16 years). As much as I want someone to step up and smash it, I always hope that I can keep it for one more year.
So. Janet probably knew that her records were in danger as soon as Laure Manaudou started her rampage. I'm sure the 800 won't last more than another year, and I hope she realizes how much people idolize those swims, and always will.
The problem with swimming these days is once you're erased from the record books, you're quickly forgotten. Do any of the elite swimmers today know about Tom Jager, Matt Biondi, Mary T. Meagher and Steve Lundquist?
