Karen's pregnant blog

When I was pregnant with Patrick (Jr.) now 7, I asked my coach, Kerry, if there was much information on competitive swimming and training while pregnant. He didn't know of any. Since then I've had two more kids (now 3 and 4) and there's still nothing really about this subject. So I'll use myself as a guinea pig, and maybe it will help others in the future... This will be our last, and with this one, I'd like to have goals, unlike with the other three. Obviously, my number one goal is to have a healthy baby. My nutrition is key here, for the baby and myself. Sleep is crucial for me, so that too is a goal. Other goals are lifting, and minimum weight gain (I still have 20 from last time, mostly in my stomach!) and to swim in Austin and be somewhat competitive. My due date is January 20, 2008. I'm afraid I will be put on bed rest near the end, because Carrick (3) was born 5 weeks early, and we don't know why. He spent 2 weeks in the Intensive Care, and is fine now. I read that the odds have gone up significantly for me now to have another early delivery. (With all of my other deliveries, by C-section, I swam the day I delivered and was back in the water two weeks later.) Tomorrow, I will be 4 weeks pregnant. And while I swam Saturday (2,000 SCM- see Rude Noodlers thread) I didn't get to do the only practice today (Memorial Day) at 8:30am because Brenna (4) was still sleeping... I have some questions, and I hope you will all pitch in your :2cents: Sorry, I don't make change :p How do I modify weight lifting while pregnant? Anybody do OW swims while pregnant (water temps around 70)? Thanks!
  • Everybody is so sweet! I really gave some serious thought before putting the blog out there... wasn't sure. I tried to change the title, but it wouldn't go. Anyway, I'm having a really tough time. I am SO tired. I go home from work, do what's necessary, take Brenna to gymnastics (while Pat takes Patrick to swimming) and then I crash. If CPS (Child Protective Services) came into my house I'm afraid they'd take the kids, and the pets!!! It's such a disaster. And I have now built Mt. Laundrymore in the garage... I did swim on Tuesday and actually did OK. My first team practice since Nationals. I went second in the lane behind the "finned one." So it was OK, I was about 1:20's per hundred LCM, we were doing a set of 4 x 400... Got home and had such intestinal problems! Probably way TMI, but after my "trip from hell in the bathroom" I literally lost 5 pounds. Guess things are a little confused in their right now. Did not swim Wednesday... It's Friday now, could've swam yesterday, two opportunities (rare), but didn't. Was in bed all afternoon and no dinner. At 10:30, after watching the National Spelling Bee (a kid two towns over won!) I headed to Carl's Jr. with Apache and Molly, and got a Western Bacon Cheeseburger. I ate it all! I usually eat half. The dogs were VERY sad. I don't think I'll swim today, unless I go to the gym... My hubby reminded me that I was this tired with the others, I obviously have forgotten! Don't like this feeling at all. Totally exhausted. I just need to make myself go swim, it's not that I can't physically do it, I would just rather lay down! Right now, Austin is no longer a desire. The most desirable thing is my bed!
  • Some women are truly amazing, whomever that was at your meet, WOW! I remember Sara Shand (faster than KPN) being pregnant on our team. She was a good 7 or 8 months pregant and she was doing 10 x 100 on 1:05. Making them no problem and FLIP TURNS. She was huge, with number 3. She's mind-blowingly fast anyway, but then pregnant... :notworthy:
  • Karen, you will start feeling better after the first trimester, you are just not remember the fatigue that is always there at this time. Plus you have 3 others to care for, and you are a bit older, and that all plays into it. Hang in there and know your work-outs will keep you in good shape!
  • Hi, I'm not doing so well with this blog am I? At least in the swimming realm there hasn't been a lot to report! I did swim one day last week 2,000 LCM and got out early, not feeling great. I swam Monday and Tuesday of this week and did well. Both over 3,000 yards. I even managed a 1:08 100 free SCY, at the end of a 2,400 yard really tough set :) My hubby just finished scaling Mt. Shasta today, so I probably won't get to swim tonight as I'll have to pick him up tonight upon his return. I have continued to be exhausted. Just sleepy tired. I'm happy to say that my weight has only gone up 7 pounds, especially since I haven't been swimming much... I do have a question though NSR. My doctor is not listening to me! It's really frustrating. How does one go about getting a second opinion, and will insurance cover it? I know this baby was conceived on May 1st. Four weeks ago, the ultrasound confirmed it. I went in yesterday, what I am sure is 7 weeks, and the ultrasound showed the baby's size at 10.5 weeks!!! I reminded the doctor that we have big babies. He moved my due date back from January 22 to January 12, which will be only 36.5 weeks instead of 38. I'm really upset by this because Carrick came early (water broke) at 35 weeks and spent 2 weeks in the ICN. Aarrrgggh! Any thoughts would be more than welcomed :) Oh, and I do have a goal for swimming. My hubby and I are entering LC Pac Champs in Santa Cruz the weekend of July 8th, spending the weekend with the kids (Boardwalk and all) and then we're surprising the kids with DISNEYLAND. I can't wait!!!!!! My 37th b-day is the 10th. Can't think of anything better than being with the family and Mickey :) (Well, a margarita would be nice!)

  • Karen: Haven't heard from you in awhile ... wondered how the pregnancy was going. Hope all is well, that you're not too exhausted and still swimming. Hope you're getting some rest!!

How cool is it that you're doing a meet while pregnant? :cheerleader: Hopefully, you will at least be awake for it! I remember that exhausted feeling. Plus, you have 3 other little ones to tend to. That's odd about your doctor. Was he with you for the first three kids? He should know their birth weight, etc. I hear ya on that early labor stuff. That is scarey. I'm not sure if a second opinion would be covered by insurance though ... I've never gotten one before. But insurance companies usually try to deny anything they can. They probably have a pre-set schedule for authorized OBGYN visits at x times during your pregnancy. You may not even be old enough for amnio ... Talk to your doc again. Or, if it's a different one, ask him to review your records. If he is still obstinant, you might get a second opinion anyway. Watch out during the end of your second trimester for any signs of pre-term labor. It's sometimes hard to tell the difference between those braxton hicks contractions and the real thing. Docs can't really tell unless they hook you up to the machines. Just be on guard after your last early delivery. My experience was that the pre-term labor worsened between #2 and #3. Have a fanstastic time in DisneyLand!! Guess what? My birthday is July 10th too! :party2:

  • Well, I actually made 4 workouts this week. M, T, Th, and today, Friday! Yesterday was a really good workout. We did a lot of sprint 50s and I went 33s for my fly and back and 38 for my *** (all from a push). I was astounded. I jokingly said to Kerry, "I must be tapered." Not missing a beat he quipped, "Or just hormonal." He does have a point! This doctor delivered babies 2 and 3. We had to change doctors when my preferred OB struck out on her own, and she didn't accept our insurance. This is a doc she recommended... He is fully aware, or should be, as the records are right in front of him! What kills me is that the doctor can't seem to remember this same conversation from 4 weeks ago, but was happy to tell me that he shared my experience with his fellow colleagues about my trip to the ER at Nationals in Seattle! (The ER doc in Seattle lifted up the sheet to do an exam and he said, "Whoo, smells like chlorine!") Naturally, I had come from the pool!!! Anyway, does anyone have any medical authority to answer me this: If I know the baby is 8 weeks from the day of conception, but is measuring 11weeks on the (I can't think of the name of the machine! not a sonogram, it's a taking-the-picture-machine!!!!) is the baby as fully developed as an 11 week old would be???
