Karen's pregnant blog

When I was pregnant with Patrick (Jr.) now 7, I asked my coach, Kerry, if there was much information on competitive swimming and training while pregnant. He didn't know of any. Since then I've had two more kids (now 3 and 4) and there's still nothing really about this subject. So I'll use myself as a guinea pig, and maybe it will help others in the future... This will be our last, and with this one, I'd like to have goals, unlike with the other three. Obviously, my number one goal is to have a healthy baby. My nutrition is key here, for the baby and myself. Sleep is crucial for me, so that too is a goal. Other goals are lifting, and minimum weight gain (I still have 20 from last time, mostly in my stomach!) and to swim in Austin and be somewhat competitive. My due date is January 20, 2008. I'm afraid I will be put on bed rest near the end, because Carrick (3) was born 5 weeks early, and we don't know why. He spent 2 weeks in the Intensive Care, and is fine now. I read that the odds have gone up significantly for me now to have another early delivery. (With all of my other deliveries, by C-section, I swam the day I delivered and was back in the water two weeks later.) Tomorrow, I will be 4 weeks pregnant. And while I swam Saturday (2,000 SCM- see Rude Noodlers thread) I didn't get to do the only practice today (Memorial Day) at 8:30am because Brenna (4) was still sleeping... I have some questions, and I hope you will all pitch in your :2cents: Sorry, I don't make change :p How do I modify weight lifting while pregnant? Anybody do OW swims while pregnant (water temps around 70)? Thanks!
  • Thanks George. :) Obviously, these people are not doing breaststroke correctly! No exertion, hmmpph. :p I actually found *** harder to do, because it tugged on my back. And backstroke, I just feel silly! All lumpy an' all :lmao:
  • I weightlifted through both my pregnancies and agree there is not a whole lot out there for people serious about fitness being pregnant. What I found was that up until the very end, I had to do no motifications with most weight lifting. Core work had to change obviously, but everything else was fairly easy to keep up. With the first, I was put on bed rest 3 weeks before he was born, so all exercise stopped. With my daughter, I worked out pretty intensely until a week prior when my hips started to feel funny and unbalanced. Then I just took walks. She came a week early, and although under 7 pounds, was healthy. I did not learn to swim until she was 7, so cannot contribute to that. I had c-section with my son and started playing softball 4 weeks later. With my daughter, it was normal delivery, but I waited longer to play ball, because with two, sleep was more important.

I really think that regular exercise before and during pregant is the key to losing weight quickly post-baby. I never swam pregnant, so I have no advice on that score. I did run, ski, walk to work, and go to the gym regularly. The ellipse was very easy to do while pregnant. I also lifted some. Watch out for the bedrest issue! I had some pre-term labor with #2, severe pre-term labor with #3 and was on bedrest and drugs for a long time. They told me if I had any more kids, I could be on bedrest the whole time. No thanks. I hated bed rest. No exercise then ... (Although despite the pre-term labor all my kids were born on or one day before their due date.) I hope you can sleep well with #4. I couldn't sleep at all with #3. Hormones. But that's relatively rare, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. If you eat healthy, your weight gain will be fine. Most people who gain a lot of weight are either very petite to begin with or overindulge. I can't wait to meet you at Austin, so I hope everything goes swimmingly well. I hope you have relatives or good babysitters to help!

Any one who can should exercise, my Chuckie was 2 mons pregnant when she passed out and fell down a hill while watching me swim. She stayed in the hospital for 10 weeks then we had to hire a housekeeper for the rest of her pregnancy. The doctor had told us he did not think she would be able to give birth. She was not supposed to do anything. We had our sixth Linda, what a girl.
  • Hey Karen! Congrats again on #4. I would be very interested in a pregnancy blog! I was a total slug during my pregnancy... no excuses like bedrest or whatever, I was just a slug! If and when we have #2, I would like to do a little better and my doctors offer nothing helpful. "Don't get your heartrate above 120." Uh, hello? I can get my heartrate above 120 dressing the toddler... duh...
  • Above 120? Geez, I rode in a bikathon when I was 4 months and I stopped at 50 miles. Pretty sure my HR was above 120!
  • I received a PM from Lucky McCharm who is due in November. She was excited about the blog, and I encouraged her to contribute (daily, if she wants) as well. I think I'll change the name to "I'm pregnant blog" and then it won't be just "mine". We all know the more information to work with the better :) I can't wait to swim tomorrow back at practice. Not working out for a week, I'm feeling Shamu-ish!!! So, can I gather, that those of you who lifted during pregnancy, continued with your regular routine, abs excluded of course? The 140 is a joke. I found I could get up to 180-185 before I thought I should back off a bit. As long as it came back down as usual, I felt I was doing OK.
  • It would be great to hear from Dara Torres on this. Whatever she did certainly helped put her into a great position this year.
  • Hi Jeff, Yep. And thanks. My team didn't even know until after I swam the 400 IM. Mark Gill helped me out. I asked him to announce, when I finished, that "Walnut Creek Masters, you have an unofficial disqualification in Lane 6. Swimming two to a lane!" My team got it- a lot of fun announcing it that way :) And MR. COMMINGS, it occurred to me that it was YOU who ran me down in that relay at Pac Champs. I teased you even in the warm up pool after, although I don't know if you'd remember. Hmmph. Well, I'm glad to know I was run down by someone of your caliber and excellence. :thhbbb: My God man, you went a 25. for your 50 *** at Nationals!!! :notworthy: Most impressive, and nice to meet you :agree:
