Sprint vs. Distance

In swimming, how is it that one can excel in both sprints and long distance? Is it because the distance games in swimming are only "relatively" distance games but are not really distance games from a physiologic perspective? In the world of tracks, for example, an athlete cannot excel at both sprints and distance. Even the athletes from the two areas look different - much leaner for the distance runners and muscular for the sprinters. I am wondering about this because whether I should focus on either the sprint or the distance as I plan to participate in the masters meet, or whether I don't have to sacrifice one for the other.

I totally agree! Nothing wears me out more than doing 200IM repeats. I think you get a better workout when you mix up strokes. A swimmer swims all strokes. End of story. As long as they're legally done. Laughability is just a bonus for your friends and teammates.

Borrow away, slowswim! And Senor Stud? You may be old, but you are a boy. And for some reason that defective little chromosone makes you swim faster. Probably less drag. Well you still have fly... ;) how's your backstroke...maybe there is neutral territory here someplace...
  • I am pretty skeptical of the even/negative splitting thing. I have mediocre, but solid races when I even split a 200+. The only way for me to go faster is to go harder on the first 100 - if I start any slower, the rest of the race will be slow as well. See worlds results: 50 free: 27.56 100 free: 28.93 1:00.04 (31.11) 200 free: 29.69 1:03.11 (33.42) 1:37.49 (34.38) 2:12.12 (34.63) - back half 1:09.01 400 free: 30.54 (30.54) 1:04.73 (34.19) 1:39.39 (34.66) 2:15.01 (35.62) -- 1:10.27 2:50.71 (35.70) 3:26.93 (36.22) -- 1:11.92 4:03.18 (36.25) 4:38.75 (35.57) -- 1:11.82 I am all about the "go out fast and see what happens" mentality (even for a 800/1000 or 1500/1650). There was no visible piano, and I certainly didn't feel like one came. Judging by the splits of the 200 and 400, you'd say I am a sprinter. Then you look at the 50 time :D
  • Judging by the splits of the 200 and 400, you'd say I am a sprinter. Then you look at the 50 time :D It probably doesn't work for everyone. I would suggest, however, that was just a very poorly split 200. The 400 was better, but I think you went a little too fast on the first 100.
  • I'm with The Fortress. My 100s are close together (and I have been known to put in final 50s that are faster than my first), but that is because I am a wuss, not because I am a secret distance swimmer: my times drop off a lot from short to long and in practice the real distance swimmers take me out. In my mind further evidence includes the fact that my race and practice times are super far apart, likewise rested and unrested. Wuss pretty much sums it up. Although I do work hard in practice usually, unless I'm loafing or skipping the 400 frees. Obviously, sprinters can swim distance (and vice versa). We're in the water putting in a boatload of laps. We could if we want to, we just don't. We prefer to take the abuse as in post #2. I didn't get as much abuse when younger because I did swim a lot of middle distance events. In those days, everybody swam everything. Why, I apparently swam a 200 breaststroke I had forgotten about until recently. As to sprinters taking races out hard, the last time I took out a race fast, somewhat inadvertently (race inexperience), the last length was not a pretty sight. I think I would prefer 75s to 100s.
  • All distance swimmers know that sprinters are just part timers that can start and turn. D-men rule! :blah: :thhbbb: :shakeshead: I'm so tired of this battle! :dedhorse: Haven't done a sprint quality workout before have you? They wear me out far faster than a long moderate effort workout.
