Swimming Myths

I overheard some ladies talking yesterday and instructing their kids not to get in the ocean. Here are two of their reasons: 1) they just had lunch and lady said you'll get cramps, you can't swim for an hour, and 2) your face will turn to scales while food is in your stomach. Later, a young woman was advising me on my newest problem, leg cramps, and she told me it was impossible for me to get leg cramps because I wasn't sprinting. She said that leg cramping is caused from dehydration and only a person who sprints will get dehydrated; not distance people, so she suggested I see a doctor. We all know these are pretty ridiculous, have you overheard anyone advising others about "their myths?" The people making these comments were from England.
  • Don't size someone up on appearence and think you will beat them. I did it in track and learned my lesson the hard way (several times).......I did it again in swimming and learned the hard way.......I don't do it any more. Athletes are "like a box of chocolates.....you don't know what you are going to get"......Forest Gump.
  • hmm I 've gone from 193 to 180 since Thanksgiving. I've eaten well not avoided anything and swam 3x a week for about 2000-2500Y a swim. I've worked hard about I'll extend the rest here and there if I'm dragging. I guess we are all different. i've gone from 246 to 222 (taking me down to about 11% bf) since Christmas, watching what I eat and swimming 15 to 20k yards per week. sure I want to eat, but eating right vs fast food crap and stuff loaded with sugar and fat and salt makes all the difference.
  • Leslie, there is more illusion than measurable differences in the wide shoulder myth. Let's call it "body sculpture" which when it is the result of swimming stays there contrary to the other "body sculpture" (which I have seen my fair share) done by a scalpel and some lipo suction. Swimming won't make you lose weight (within a reasonable one hour a day training) is not a myth, however you look better even though your weight is the same. Gotta go run or lift weights to get some of the weight off. I carry about three goggles, one pair fins, maybe a snorkel and mask, and my new swimp3 to practice. I am obcessed with having clear goggles. I have the speedo liquid thing and I also shampoo my goggles with baby shampoo. I also carry about three or more pairs of ear plugs. The pile of tops/shirts I have that are now too tight in the shoulders beg to differ ... I have naturally broad shoulders as I am sure many do but swimming definitely bulks them up.
  • When we go to practice we float up and down and splash around ... Sprinters have it easy ... if you belive this I'll give you some sprinter workouts to change your mind And breaststroke is slow ... it's the slowest stroke, BUT it is NOT easy ... now it's now old lady not getting her hair wet that gives me dirty looks when I get in the pool and swim fly slow, but it's slow, especially the way I swim it ...

    9. Swimming makes you fat. 10. Breaststroke is the easiest stroke. 11. If you're swimming in a triathlon, form doesn't matter -- it's most important to "feel the burn" during your workout.

What is that supposed to mean exactly? LOL Well the don't swim for and hour is what I grew up with that it can cause cramps but I thought it was stomach cramps...never heard the scales thing. Were they from Northern England? Myth #4 Breaststroke is slow. I like your Myth #4, hilarious. The reason I mentioned they were from England was because this would normally be something a Honduran would say, they have a thousand old wives' tales, some you just can't believe; I could write a book on their tall tales.

Myth #5 - backstoke is also slow and easy Myth #6 - it's impossible to lose weight while using swimming for exercise Myth #7 - you have to carbo load before a meet Yikes, Kari, those are some myths; hadn't heard those before except the Carbo Load before a meet--I don't get that one either.

If you go swimming or if you take a bath after eating you will have a congestion and probably die! That was told to me by my grandparents (from England, duh...), one of which was a medical doctor. I was brainwashed into believing that, although I have little scientific evidence of the fact. One might say that when digesting food some of your blood is diverted to the splanctic (something like that, the digestive tract) system and so if you exercise or take a bath you might have less blood going to the brain and that would lead you to "congestion" which I think means passing out. Not much evidence there either. Hard to break growing up habits, although in the past I have been inbibing at the beach, and eating tidbits and for the purpose of cooling off I would enter the water. Myth: broad shoulders come from swimming. Not so. It's genetic. I was born with wide shoulders, like my dad and his dad. The same myth that playing basketball makes you taller. Non swimmers think we can't swim for 1,000 meters or more without stopping. They seem to think that swimming in the pool gives us time to rest. Some people doubt that I can truly swim 1,000 meters at a lake or ocean.

Swimming adds muscle to the delts, creates more sweep in the lats, and tones the muscles of the misdsection and this all adds to the appearance of a narrow waist and width at the shoulder.
