I thought I'd try an experiment here. I propose that anyone of any swimming level can use this thread (or not) when, whether in a small way or earthshaking manner you've done something in the pool that you're proud and/or pleased by. Anyone is welcome to add encouraging comments (or not) or ask for more info., but please no grandstanding or feuding. Okay- I'll go first (and I'm just as hesitant as anyone else). Context: last few months hellish: collapse of my dream business, death in family, huge money troubles etc. result months out of water & exercise & 30lb gain. Further, I just went back over the last 10 yrs, averaged 1 meet a year, no more than 4 months training in any one year. So- been back in water 4 weeks, 2-3 times a week and mostly feeling like chopped liver. Monday night coach say we're going to do dive 25's (meters) from blocks, starter's instructions. Now I haven't done this in years 'cause I have a very bad neck- but I've been frustrated so...did all 3 breastroke 16.3, 15.5, 16.2 which tells me I've still got prospects to go fast again! I am pleased.

I just want to pat myself on the back for getting back in the water after a year off for various reasons. I'm on the "advice for a backslider" thread. I hate to cheer myself on, I feel like a fraud after reading all these stories, but I'm happy I finally did it, getting back in the water, and I did it with the help of people on this board, so atta-boy, atta-girl to all of you for your kind words!

For the first time in a long time, I logged over 17,000 in yards/meters (different pools) during the last week. Plus, two five mile runs and two sessions of weights and drylands at the gym. I'm tired. :snore: Shoulder seems to be holding up reasonably well; more prolo jabs on Wednesday. Wow, Fort, that is a pile of yardage for a sprinter like yourself. Are you experimenting with what could become "DISTANCE?" Hey, it's not all that bad, it's just the training for it that is BAD!!!
  • Muppet and FlyQueen--as someone who doesn't even like starting blocks, I stand in awe of you two! (But I stand on the pool deck, ha!) Fortress... lots of yards, girl! Way2go!! Watch out... YOU may be the next distance addict. Parents, have you talked to your children about distance? Slow-twitch... it's a beautiful thing... :D Luv2Sprint--You're in the right place--this thread's about cheering on oneself as well as others, and it doesn't matter if you're cheering for your first swim back or 10k yards, you're cool! Congrats on starting your comeback!
  • Yo guys, here's my attagirl moment: Yesterday, I took my LOOOOONGEST swim... final countdown, three weeks to go before my 5.25 miler, and yesterday, in a POOL (complete with kids playing near my lane and leaning on the lane rope), I did ... 5.25 miles!! Or 9450 yards! Not in Donna's league, but thanks to Donna's extremely helpful coaching! My arms/shoulders were saying things to me that I probably shouldn't put on a public forum, but they held up... I rewarded myself at dinner with a Flying Fish on draft! (True to finding one's inner fish, maybe drinking beer w/ a name like that will get me closer....) ;) I think I might be almost warmed up for this race...
  • Swim Stud, Where is your 1 mile swim? Are you coming down for the Ocean City race this weekend? Swimmy :)
  • FMIF, I think you've found your inner fish! Attagirl...I'm signing up for a 1 mile OW which should be fun... Thanks Rich! My inner fish and I have a lunch date on August 3, hee hee! That's cool that you're planning an open water event! Wish you success... Just be careful... darn things are addictive! ;) You'll be able to do it breaststroke and beat many, many of the freestylers! :applaud: You might find this interesting: I've just been corresponding w/ someone via e-mail who two years ago breaststroked the swim I'm going to do!
  • Diane, My goggles are off to you. 9450 yards is HUGE and in a lot of people's league. Are you kidding me? The amazing part of this is you were barely swimming a mile 8 weeks ago. AND, the only person who made this happen was you and your resolve and commitment. My dear, you are in the Distance League whether you think so or not. 5.25 miles is a long way in a short amt of time. Celebrate, keep training, don't taper too soon. If people don't get back to you on your Taper question on Open water, you can always ask Andy. Maybe Leonard and Rob Copeland will jump in on your taper question. The thing I like the most is this just proves that all of us can be fit at any age; we just have to commit to it. I'm proud of your accomplishment and I can't wait for you to get to enjoy the actual open water swim: a new life's adventure!! donna :wine: Thanks Donna! I am inspired by your example! Actually surprised I was able to up the distance so soon. I think a big factor is that I seem to recover from long swims lots faster than from long runs. I'd definitely be allowing myself more time for, say, running a marathon, b/c my legs are dogmeat after a long run. My arms/shoulders are mildly sore after a long swim, but a day off usually recharges me pretty nicely. Fascinating the new territory I find in myself as I go along! For all of you who are starting out, if you see a race that just grabs your attention and you think maybe it would be neat to try it but also think "there's no way I could do that!"--think again! It might not be this year, but if you really want it, why not aim for it... in a year, maybe two years, just keep it as a goal! When the time is right, send in your entry. You'll be glad you did! The learning curve alone is worth the effort!

Amazing!!:bouncing: I think a 5.25 miler is far too short for you now! I think you should fly down and do that 20 mile thing with Donna. You insane people.
