This has been bothering me for years, you know, you hear that a research study has been conducted and they find that eggs are bad for you, and then back in the 1980s, it was highly recommended that people each more carbs and those folks started packing on pounds (probably they added too much oil to their pasta dishes, who knows), and the low-fat items which are indeed low fat, but they are loaded with chemicals and carbs to get them that way, and tonight on the news, there is now a research report that says people are passing away from vitamins and supplements. The vitamin manufacturers did report they have seen an increase in this, but don't know why. This was on the Ticker on Fox News.
So does the general population really follow these trendy research reports? I know I have always been skeptical of any report. I remember back when I was a child I saw very few overweight people; there weren't a lot of fastfood places to eat; we ate balanced meals and snacks were fruit. Not anymore it seems. And the only reason why I am large is because I put in more than I spend (well, duh).
There was a report that did get my attention several years ago and it came from the Mayo Clinic. They reported they found that sunblock caused some skin cancers. Now, this was squashed after being on the news for a few short days, but their study really went into detail and it had been conducted for over 15 years. A friend of mine who is a dermatologist in California agrees with this study in some cases. He says he is finding an alarming number of cancers that are attributed to overuse of sunblocks. His recommendation is to cover the body with lightweight clothing, stay in the sun only 2 hours a day for the vitamin benefits, and to use nothing over a 15 sunblock.
So, even though after being on this island for six years now, and having ate more fish than is probably in the sea, I am longing for enchiladas and anything beef because I haven't seen a study yet on enchiladas.
Thoughts?

Someone on my team used to drink the "5 hour energy" drink" right before racing. She thought it helped. I've used it, but have no idea if it works or not. ...
Probably wouldn't be much help for a sprinter. Unless that sprinter is like me and could be timed with a sundial.:joker:
So, here we have another article this one on amts of water to drink and it, too, has limitations. I don't drink water because I am supposed to, I drink it and lots of it because I love it, and I am thirsty all the time (no, I am not diabetic), it's probably because I live in 100 degree weather, high humidity and sweat like a pig all the time, 365 days a year. And swim for several hours out in the heat and sun.
I can't help it, I have to have more water than the average person!!! So I suppose I am a person who is dispelling the facts here in action. I know I need more than a half gallon even if some research suggests differently.

Donna,
I think that the contributors to the article would agree that ambient temperature and activity level are going to alter the daily requirements of water. I am sure you are fine.
Put simply...if you are constantly having to empty your bladder and your urine is clear like water you are probably drinking too much water. If you drain your bladder infrequently and when you do it is dark yellow you are probably not taking in enough water. Some things are just not worth the money spent to investigate them I think.
Fortress, didn't know that Omega-3 was good for shoulder health too... Good to know! Make sure that when you add flaxseed to your food for Omega-3 that it is milled flaxseed (ie., all ground up). The body has a difficult time extracting the omega-3 from the whole seeds... they tend to pass through.
The hubby was adding milled flax in his oatmeal for cholesterol control. Guess I'll start using it too!
One time I also ingested one of those toy sponge things that you put in a glass of water to expand. It looked just like one of the pills I was taking. My son left it on the counter by accident. I had a baby dinosaur growing in me. I didn't take folic acid.
Delivery wasn't difficult.
That happened to my cat. Ate a piece of that spongey crayola dough stuff that is malleable and then dries up. Dried up inside him and blocked his intestines. He couldn't have a normal delivery. So he had to rushed to the emergency room for a difficult c-section.

You had a cat?!! I thought you were allergic? Cats are the worst.
Interesting Carrie, because I have met your husband. When you think of someone with high cholestrol you think of someone not fit, which your husband certainly does not fit that bill. I have a BIL who runs marathons, and no matter how much he watches his diet and exercises, he cannot get his numbers down. Last year at 47 he finally got put on meds. He has outlived both his parents who died of heart attacks. Shows what genetics can do.
Dorothy that goes along with my "life is a lottery" thinking. You can do certain stuff but much is already packed in the box that you were shipped in on your birthday ;) Exercise and moderation...ignore the mirror and scales within reason.
I was recently diagnosed with High cholesterol, but my Good cholesterol is so good that the ratio is fine. My Doc prescribed two glasses of Red Wine every Night :drink: and Fish oil pills. Make sure they check HDL and LDL. He said new research for people with high Good Cholesterol shows that wine/fish oil can scrub the arteries clean. Intense exercise cause High Good Cholesterol!
As for food/Exercise: everything in moderation to include the extremes. You need to shock your body every now and again. Just burn the calories you eat and you have no problems :2cents:
Omega 3 is a natural antiinflammatory. That's why it is so good for all parts of the body!
I dropped my O3's after I quit breastfeeding. . . guess I should add them back in. The dog and I are both on glucosamine. :laugh2:
Experience Life magazine (www.lifetimefitness.com/.../) just had an interesting article regarding ph balance - eating acidic vs alkaline. Has anyone looked in to this? They often have online versions of their articles, but not this one.
