Since my previous poll looks to be shut down reasonably soon (it appears to have attracted the evicted tenants from the dating/marriage thread), I thought I would try yet another one on the social component of masters swimming. I am pretty sure that when the sport was founded, socializing and camaraderie were key parts of the whole business.
As a former coach for a smallish team in my home town, plus a former college "continuing education" teacher of writing classes (i.e., non graded, non credit), it struck me very clearly that some people are very dedicated to the specific activity per se (be this swimming or learning how to write a magazine article), but the majority come together to participate only partly because of the ostensible reason, and partly (if not mainly) for the chance to be around and enjoy the company of folks they have something in common with.
My team goes to breakfast after Saturday morning practice and to a bar on Thursday nights. When I first joined the team in 1999 I was shocked that people actually went out every week, but as I got more and more comfortable getting to know my teammates, I actually looked forward to Thursday nights to go eat chips, burgers, have a beer or a chocolate waffle over a good conversation...mostly not even swimming related! Sometimes people show up and haven't even been to practice. Or me lately, I go to Fort's team's practice now on Thursday nights and then go over and meet my friends at the bar. We've all become really good friends over the years. Thursday night is "bar night."
Well, who the heck were you swimming with before? You could at least hang out in the hot tub and speak about unspeakable subjects with us for a bit .... Look what you missed last Thursday night.

I do hang out in the hot tub...before going to hang out at the bar with my other team. Other team is FXCM and I was recently elected to the BOD. I swim with them on Mon/Wed these days. Heard I missed a good post-workout conversation last Thursday. I wonder how many other team's pools have hot tubs. They're hard to find around NOVA!
Lately, I've told teamates that I can't hang around and socialize after workout; "I've got to rush home and catch the latest episode of BickerFest on the USMS Forums"...they just don't get it...

That is a lot of working out! I think you'll be ready to rock and roll by the time of the Bay swim! Watch out Muppet!

Most people I know do a fair bit of :drink: . I'm sure you'd fit right in.;) Although having your own hot tub is pretty great. Did you sit in it again after your triumph this weekend? I miss that speedo santa avatar.

LOL
Are you looking at me?
I can't resist th Fortress when she set's me up like that. Of course my offer stands for you to join me for beers in my post workout hottub too...we can talk about hunting and football (both types) then stand on the snow covered ground in our manly swimshorts and cook hot dogs on the BBQ...
just remember there is no diving pit on the hottub though so consider that a liabilty disclaimer...
"...they can't stop us laughing..."
I can't resist the SwimStud when he sets me up like that:
"Waivers aren't worth the paper they're written on." Geek
Hunting? I can only guess what you're hunting. But since this is clearly a social thread dealing with socializing, it's probably OK to mention that word.
