You are the Rules Dictator

Simple. You have absolute power to change any technique rules, start/finish rules, age up rules, sky is the limit as long as the rules pertain to swimming. What would you change and why?

I totally agree with #1 Leonard......The fact that women don't swim the 1500 in the Olympics is similar to other previous (and current) rules in women's sports like not playing more than 3 games in a WNBA finals??.....Women are tough enough to handle the same rules and events as men.....Try and keep up with Janet Evans or Katie Ziegler in a 1500! This has been one of the enduring mysteries of my athletic life: Why do men and women often have different events. When I first started running (1969), you'd often hear stuff like "A woman can't run the marathon because her uterus will be damaged." (I swear I heard this.) Even as a kid, it made no sense to me. I remember thinking "If you can push something the size of a bowling ball out of there, how is a running going to do more damage?" Has anyone ever seen a reason/rationale why there is no 1500 for women in the Olys? It doesn't even have to make sense, I just wonder if anyone ever tried to rationalize it publicly. -LBJ

All events should be mixed, may the winner rule.

I was told that a women's heart is larger then a man's how could they forgive us for all the things we do wrong.
  • Jayhawk- I like your rules...Pool temp here is generally 84-85. Miserable for a long workout. Regarding the suit, have you tried the polyester suits? I used to go through a lycra suit every 2-3 months. I got a polyster suit in March and it still looks and feels new.

Our coach who was also the pool manager always kept the pool at 75 - 76f as he thought it was better for us to train.
  • Mixed relays would be awesome ... now how would you set up the Medleys? Meaning make your "A" team ... you HAVE to leave off a world record holder, what would be the most effective/fastest combo of 2 women and 2 men? I have my own theories on this ...

Medley: Aaron Piersol, Brendan Hansen, Mary Descenza, Amanda Weir. Free: Neil Walker, Cullen Jones, Amanda Weir, Natalie Coughlin. That was easy.
  • Shouldn't Natalie Coughlin be swimming the butterfly leg on the medley relay too?
  • Here's a good rule: Get rid of that odd/even heats in different pools thing they did/do at Nationals. As a complete masters neophyte, I traveled to Coral Springs this year for the first time to swim for a couple days and sit on the beach. I had never been to a meet where odd heats were in one pool and even heats in another. (This was only my 5th meet ever.) I accidentally overheard someone talking about it and asked them what the heck they were talking about. (OK, I'm a moron.) But I found it confusing. I kept wondering what day/which pool was even, odd etc. I prefered what they did at Worlds, alternating men and women in the two pools. At least there was no question as to which pool I was swimming in.
