Canadian Nationals & Beer

OK, I'm persuaded by Peter Cruise's discussion of Canadian beer and have decided to forego swimming at USMS Nationals this year. Instead, I'm off to Calgary to try the Canadian Nationals. So here's the challenge to all you Canadian Forum users: where are the good local brews in Calgary? By local, I mean that it can't cross Province lines & doesn't come in cans. I'm staying near the pool & won't be driving. So, I need some suggested locations within staggering (er, walking) distance of the hotel. If some swimming gets done that's fine, but I'd like to come home with a good beer experience. Right now I'm starting my beer taper (nothing but 3.2 in very quick shots - the high intensity, low volume theory) until the Champs. Any help would be much appreciated. -- mel

Catherine- usually lots of nanaimo bars at the social, unless I scratch my last event & scoff them all. We also have an extensive leisure/wave/slide pool element, so the Geek could come & noodle away anonymously, insulting overweight people who are Canadian to his heart's content. We usually offer (along with the normal events) some 25meter events, supposedly for novices, but I'm sure that this would be the Goodsmith's ultimate event. Come to think of it, Tall Paul could fall in and set a world record for that distance.

Mel, Unfortunaltely I won't be at the Nationals. A few medical hiccups. But I will hopefully be swimming my Open Water Events. I host 2 -a 10km or 6.25mile swim and a 26.2km or 16.2mile marathon swim. You can swim the marathon as a solo or as a relay. up to 4 swimmers, per team, each swimmer swims once and equal distance. So a team of 2, each swimmer does 13.1kms, a team of 3; 8.3kms each and a team or 4; 6.5kms each. Perhaps a USMS team and a couple of solo swimmers. Wetsuits permitted. Imagine how good a cold one would be after the completion of one of these events!! Maybe even a Nanaimo team (It's only an hour to the lake from Nanaimo!! and I have swum in Open Water events with some of your team mates Peter!) Peter, I can attest to the great pool in your home town. I often cruise up there to train. I have raced there several times, it is indeed a really nice pool. Hope there are some takers for my truly fantastic swims. AS the Skaha Ultra swim is no longer, I am offering these swims to keep all those swimmers outside in the open waters of BC. Kiwi

Hey Kiwi, thanks for the tip on the amnesiac beer. I was aware of the elevation of Calgary. I live at 8000 feet and swim at 9000, so it will be a welcome relief. However, it isn't sea level, so I'm trying to temper my expectations some. Are you going to be there? -- mel
