In fact they are just about even with what they did at the 2003 NCAA Championships. The 200 Medley Relay was real interesting because of Ian Crocker and Neil Walker. At the 2003 NCAA's the splits were :21.50, :23.59, :20.35 by Dan Ditoro going Fly and 19:03 by Ian Cocker going Free for the 1:34.46. Big difference having Crocker on Fly and Neil Walker going :18.76 in the Free. From these swims, I think they can challenge the 3:04.47 time they did at the 2003 NCAA meet and break another American Record. They have a 3:06.00 seed time. Ian Crocker only .01 off his AR. Brendan Hansen only.05 of his best time off :51.96, and Piersol going a good 200 Free time of 1:34.10 to take second to Jayme Cramer at 1:33.74. Sets up an interesting rematch tonight in the 100 Back. Piersol's best is :45.71 to Cramer's :46.05. I wonder why Neil Walker doesn't swim this being the American Record holder. Will Brendan Hansen and Michael Phelps break there AR in the 200 *** and 200 Fly tonight. Will the Americans come thru in the 50 tonight and beat Roland Schoeman. I think Crocker, Walker, Lezak, and Brunnelli have a chance. On the Womens side there should be a good race in the 200 *** between Kirk and Jendrick. Jendrick suprised me yesterday dropping from a :59.80 best to a :58.87. Kirk is swimming great missing her AR by .18 and the 200 Fly will be a great race with any of the top 5 to win. Ande, I hope you are happy with your 500 Free. By the way did you know that Nick Brunelli broke 2 USMS records so far in the 18-24 age group. I hope someone is measuring the pool and filling out the USMS Record Applications. His 1:35.22 in the 200 Free broke Roman Barnier's record of 1:37.60 and his prelim swim in the 50 of :19.80 broke Eric Mauer's record of :20.25. Remember FINA has nothing to do with this meet beacuse its Yards. So he is eligible for USMS records. He also has a shot at the :43.80 record in the 100 Yard Free.
  • Wow! Phelps is absolutely amazing....the man didn't slow down anywhere...maybe a couple 10ths of a second on the second half of his breastroke is all! He then picked it up on the last leg of the freestyle... Looking at the second place finisher, Michael was pretty much swimming this race alone....(I remember swimming a 200 butterfly race in the same heat as Laura Val...much the same....she was in the same heat...but not really) maybe those exhibition swims at U of M are good for him; learning to go fast with no competition! Good luck in all your races, Ande! Sally

It looks like he stratched the 200 Back today to take another shot at an American Record in the 200 IM. Will he take another record below the 1:40 barrier? I remember when Jim McConica and Mark Spitz were the first ones under 1:40 in the 200 Yard Free. Can't remember which one was first. Aaron Piersol was the first one in the 200 Yard Back. Now Michael can be the first one in 2 events in the same meet. I think he is going to do it tonight and make history. Aaron Piersol kinda suprised me with his swim. I don't ever remember him swimming a 100 Yard Back that was equal to his meters (both SCM LCM) in a big meet. I know he lost to Peter Marshall in college so to get this close to a record was excellent. I wonder if he will get Ryan Lochte AR of 1:38.29 tonight? Brenden Hansen and Tara Kirk are swimming excellent also and it will be interesting to see if Tara Kirk can translate this into the Long Course season next summer and challenge Liesel Jones. Tonight I am picking Ian Crocker to take the 100 Free with a great field. Congratulations to Nick Brunelli for lowering his USMS record in the 50 Free to :19.60 and setting another USMS record today in the 100 Free at :43.58 and maybe tonight he can be the first USMS swimmer under :43.00. Also I noticed that he set another USMS record in the 200 IM of 1:49.43 and breaking the previous record by over 3 seconds at 1:52.82 and perhaps he can lower that tonight as well. Ande, you beat your seed time by .04 so I hope you are happy with the swim. Good luck today.
