World Trials

Ok, world trials start tomorrow ... yeah! I am so excited, probably because I am going... anyway ... There are going to be some tough races. I think the 200 back is going to be an amazing race. I'm ready to call in sick to work and go back just for that race. Peirsol, Phelps, and Lochte. It's going to be amazing. Other races I think will be great ... Phelps and Crocker will go at it agian in the 100fly. The 50 free for the women has an amazing field. Kaitlin Sandeno is entered in seven events right now, do you think she'll swim all seven? It kind of sounds like she might not, I wonder what she will swim and what she'll drop. I'd love to see her take that schedule on and show the world that you girls can do it, too! Phelps is in seven also (not really surprising) - dropped the 200 fly though. I'm a little disappointed that Peirsol is only swimming his two backstroke events, I've heard he's a good mid-distance and distance freestyler so I wasn hoping he'd try that out. I was hoping Coughlin would do more events too (she's signed up for the 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, and 100 back). I think she'd be a great challenge to Hoff and Beard in the 200 IM. It'll also be great to see who emerges in the 50 free for the men, as Hall is retired and I didn't see Lezak's name on the psyche sheets. I'm also ready to see if Kate Ziegler who I've heard a lot about will step up at this meet and become the next great american female distance swimmer. Can't wait till they get going tomorrow. Any bets on the Peirsol/Phelps/Lochte showdown? What about the Locthe/Phelps showdown in general?

Anyone notice the times posted at Swiminfo? It looks like the r .72 is a reaction time as far as I can guess. Do these starting blocks have electronic pressure sensors?
  • The 200 fly times were kind of slow. Luckily, the top two did 1:58 but I think that it is kind of bad when people in the B and C finals are barely or not even doing the qualifying time(2:05 something). I guess that I am kind of bummed because if I have the right coaching, I could have made the B or C final at that kind of meet, most likely the C final. Of course, I was only able to pull off a 2:13 when I was 18. This summer, I will be lucky to get my 200 fly under 2:40 at the good old age of 28. I like how Ryan Lochte is becoming a good challenger to Perisol and Phelps. He had a pretty good meet coming off of NCAA's. Also, how about Brendan Hansen swimming faster at this meet than at the Olympics. I guess that he is just zooming along since he doesn't have college swimming and is making really good money now with his endorsement and clinics.
  • here's the results from the 100 M Fr Mens finals again look how well phelps split his race only a 1.04 diff between his first and second 50. Part of that comes from being really well conditioned and part comes from exerting just the right amount of effort on the first 50 to really nail the second one. Lochte split his race really well too but he didn't go out fast enough Lezak had the worst split differential in that heat 2.73 he must have been really hurting on the last 25 I wonder if walker really had that slow of a start, 1.25 ouch. I think Garrett Weber-Gale swam a PR. He's one to watch. Ande 1 Phelps, Michael 19 Club Wolverine/N r:+0.68 49.00 25.02 - 23.98 = 1.04 2 Lezak, Jason 29 Irvine Novaquati r:+0.66 49.09 25.91 - 23.18 = 2.73 3 Wildman-Tobrine 20 Stanford Univ. r:+0.70 49.35 25.94 - 23.41 = 2.53 4 Weber-Gale, Gar 19 U. of Texas r:+0.65 49.40 25.77 - 23.63 = 2.14 5 Walker, Neil 28 Longhorn Aquatic r:+1.25 49.42 25.92 - 23.50 = 2.42 6 Dusing, Nathani 26 Longhorn Aquatic r:+0.67 49.83 26.09 - 23.74 = 2.35 7 Lochte, Ryan 20 U of Florida/Day r:+0.65 49.98 25.63 - 24.35 = 1.28 8 Brunelli, Nicho 23 Sun Devil Aquati r:+0.70 50.11 26.29 - 23.82 = 2.47

Also, does anyone know anything about a tv channel that is something like OLN, Outdoor Living Network? A guy I know, who doesn't swim, said to me that it made a contract with some swimmign organization to broadcast most of it's events. Was the guy blowing smoke or is this true?

Well, I think the women's times were slower in the fly around 2:10. To placed in worlds you have to be around at least 2:07.
  • Originally posted by tjrpatt The girls didn't swim that bad. One girl did a 2:09. I think that Katlin Sandeno did a 2:08 at the Olympics and got fourth. Overall, the top three should have been under 2:10. I guess that Sandeno needed a break from the 200 fly this year. Sandeno DID swim the 200 fly. She went a 2:16.58 in the prelims (more than 8 seconds) off her best. I thought that the women's distance events were slow. I don't think that 4:11 in the 400 free and 8:34 in the 800 will make the finals or be anywhere near a medal in Montreal. The good news is that Kelsey Ditto and Kate Ziegler are both young and will hopefully show big time drops over the summer. I would have thought that Ziegler would have been faster. She had been tearing up pools and having great results all winter. Maybe the hype and the pressure got to her???

She didn't have a great meet as compared to the Olympics and SCM Worlds. She might be having back problems again. Thanks for the correction

OLN is the Outdoor Life Network. They show a lot of fishing shows, rodeos, stuff like that. They'll be showing the Boston Marathon later this month. I've watched it for their Tour de France coverage the last several years. Seems tonight they're covering the Iditarod sled dog race. But I don't see anything on their website about any swimming events. They do have a relationship with the U.S. Ski Team. Maybe your nonswimming friend confused skiing and swimming.
