Ok, world trials start tomorrow ... yeah! I am so excited, probably because I am going... anyway ... There are going to be some tough races. I think the 200 back is going to be an amazing race. I'm ready to call in sick to work and go back just for that race. Peirsol, Phelps, and Lochte. It's going to be amazing.
Other races I think will be great ... Phelps and Crocker will go at it agian in the 100fly. The 50 free for the women has an amazing field.
Kaitlin Sandeno is entered in seven events right now, do you think she'll swim all seven? It kind of sounds like she might not, I wonder what she will swim and what she'll drop. I'd love to see her take that schedule on and show the world that you girls can do it, too! Phelps is in seven also (not really surprising) - dropped the 200 fly though.
I'm a little disappointed that Peirsol is only swimming his two backstroke events, I've heard he's a good mid-distance and distance freestyler so I wasn hoping he'd try that out. I was hoping Coughlin would do more events too (she's signed up for the 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, and 100 back). I think she'd be a great challenge to Hoff and Beard in the 200 IM.
It'll also be great to see who emerges in the 50 free for the men, as Hall is retired and I didn't see Lezak's name on the psyche sheets.
I'm also ready to see if Kate Ziegler who I've heard a lot about will step up at this meet and become the next great american female distance swimmer.
Can't wait till they get going tomorrow.
Any bets on the Peirsol/Phelps/Lochte showdown? What about the Locthe/Phelps showdown in general?

That's my boy.
It always impresses me that his second 50 is better than his first. He was .04 behind Randall at the split, and I think .06 slower on the start, but then to be that far ahead at the finish is just cool.
whoa piersol sets a new world record in the 100 back
what a blazing 2nd 50
there's only a 1.25 second difference between his second and first 50, that's the way to split it.
27.21 - 25.96 = 1.25
he could improve his 200 back record too
when he broke his record at trials he only went 54 low in the 100 back, he's now a full second faster.
wonder if he'll go 1:53?

who are the big guns?
Let's say they are olympians like coughlin, piersol, crocker, hansen, walker, phelps, dusing, lochte, and lezak
I'm pretty sure everyone tapered for world trials
why wouldn't they be rested?
The championships aren't till like july.
once trials is done those who made it can go through a whole new training cycle to prepare for worlds.
If the times aren't as fast as the olympic times, this while important, isn't as big of a deal as being in the olympics and swimming for gold. Some swimmers took a break after the olympics.
I think phelps could qualify in most events with out much rest.
everyone who went to NCAA's rested for NCAA's then added another week. so far lochte's long course times don't seem as spectacular as his short course times.
Some might swimmer have missed hitting their taper at NCAA's, Like weber-gale, his 22.44 50 LCM free seems much more impressive than his 50 fr at NCAA's
Where as, I would have thought lochte would have been faster in the 100 and 200 free based on his NCAA times, he cut his 100 prelim swim dangerously close.
I was impressed with Lochte's 400 IM in finals, especially his last 50.
I'm having lunch with eddie reese next wednesday,
so I can ask him how much rest his guys got.
my guess is the texas guys rested for several weeks going into trials, some where between 4 - 6 weeks if I had to guess
hope this helps,

Ande, can you settle a bet for my friend and I. He thinks that the "big guns" didn't taper for Trials. I told him that there was no way they didn't do at least a shorter taper, my guess was 10 days - 2 weeks. Can you confirm this?
to beat the south africans, if no one from south africa retired
the US needs 4 guys who can split,
47 high to 48 low plus
they need to make top 6 tonight
guess we'll wait and see
they probably won't need to be as fast as they were at the olympics to win

Don't know about the other swimmers but given Phelps quotes after his 100 fly and his approach to Olympic Trials its unlikely that he rested much, if at all. I agree that he is probably the exception. As Ande pointed out the NCAA swimmers have had to deal with "partial rest" for their conference championship and then taper for NCAA and then switch from SC to LC for Trials. I think that is mentally challenging. (No doubt, the scheduling decision was still the best given our inperfect world).
100 free finals should be interesting tonight and looking ahead do we think that the US can beat the South Africans in the 4 X 100 relay at Worlds?
my guess is peirsol and hansen are swimming enough on their off days to maintain their speed and keep their feel for the water.
probably around 2,000
maybe eddie's standard meet warm up which is something like
500 free
400 pull
300 kick
200 drill like 4 x 50
100 sprints like 4 x 25
probably followed by a training set of some sort
then a warm down.
both are probably doing some 200 pace work
since both have 200 next
maybe something like 4 x 50 near race pace
yep guys wear different suits for different events
as I recall a the olympics
crocker wore a fast skin with fabric to the ankle but no top
hansen and piersol wore jammers and I think
walker wore a hi neck body skin on the relay.
I tend to wear a high neck body skin but I haven't tried my times other ways

But I'd love it if you asked Eddie Reese. Thanks!
I rationalized it the same way you did. I figured World Trials are a ways away and they don't want to risk not making the team. Competition is tight at trials. Also a couple more things since we are on topic (more or less) A lot of them didn't seem to cool down right away, what's that about? And a lot of them switched suits back and forth like crazy. And how much are they swimming on days in between races. For example Peirsol and Hansen had a couple days off between their 100s and 200s how much are the swimming on the days they don't have races? My guess is between a grand and two grand.
Thanks Ande, by the way we were cheering for all of the Longhorns at trials!

yes
that's exactly what it is
it measures reaction time
.60 - .69 is fast
about a year or so ago
the swim center got new blocks
with pressure sensors too
they only use them in big meets

It looks like the r .72 is a reaction time as far as I can guess.
Do these starting blocks have electronic pressure sensors?
