Just wanted to see how everybody shaves for meets or not?I heard different things on shaving:some shave legs and arms only, some -the entire body, some shave it with cream, some just get the body wet without cream, some shave DRY(CRAZY)!!!Supposedly the last helps get rid of some dead skin which gives you a much better feel for the water.Or, and another one I do not get:some shave even if they wear a body suit -what's up with that? Well, I would like to hear about your experiences, how it feels to swim shaved and if it helped you to shave your time off too ... Thanks.

Lol, I just realized that JoAnne is the first lady that answered that thread, is shaving(swimming related) becoming a guy thing now?(just kidding). But seriously I would like more input from ladies, too, since I am sure most of them(if not all) shave...

I shave! This is what I do before a big meet (and I'm sure some of it is psychological but what the heck, it works): I wear drag suits - two or three really ratty old ones - the week before. I let my leg hair grow at least a week, usually two to three weeks before. The morning of the first day of the meet I get up really early and shave everthing - legs AND arms. I feel slick as an eel and combined with my competition suit, I feel really slick and "fast." Then I have a bowl of oatmeal and a peanutbutter sandwich and it's all good and I'm ready for the 1650! :D

  • i only shave before big meets (nationals or zones if i'm not going to nationals). in high school i would only shave before states and in college only before big 10's. and i literally mean that those were the only times i ever shaved. thank god i've got really really light hair on my legs! that's probably part of the reason i never wore shorts in high school!!! :D

I am going to admit that I don't shave my legs for a few months in the winter (good thing that we swim in the morning and the pool is dark!) I shave before a big meet just because I remember doing that when I was in my teens and it seems right. When you get in the water after shaving there is just nothing like that feeling. You feel like greased lightening!! I wear a variety of drag suits. Usually as the year gets longer I have two(because the 2nd has worn out so I just pile on another one) and I think that this also really helps. For me I always did my best times when I was shaved and tapered. I do believe that it is very much psychological, but also physical. I will continue to have the same routine for as long as I swim just because my mind says it is right. This may not work for everyone.

If you are going to spend a lot of money on a suit then you should shave. If hair sticks through the suit then this will disturb the air patern on the suit, therefore changing the water flow around your body. Remeber these suits are tested on shaved bodies. However if you are wearing it because of comfort and self image then you won't feel any difference. I have done and do agree with full body shaving if wearing normal bathers. One word of advise for the guys. DON'T WAX. It hurts soooo much.
