I imagine that many on this Board are like me in that they swam in intensely competitive programs as youngsters, got burned out and quit swimming, maybe played other sports, and finally came back to swimming at a later stage of your life.
So, if the above description fits you, what sports did you do in the intervening years before you made it back to the pool?
The mention of the term "side out" in another thread reminded me that I played competitive volleyball for 19 years. Before that I also competed in judo, eventually ran a marathon, and finally coached volleyball, wrestling and even little league.
After all of that, and all of the injuries that went with it, I am glad to be back in the pool.

Truly, I don't know:confused:
As Steph mentioned above, they are basically silicone implants for your legs. MTV is the TV station you're thinking of, though these days they run more reality shows than music videos which is a shame. True Life is one of the shows, and it basically follows people around and films their lives as they go through a major event in their life.
Started swimming because I was afraid of the water. Perhaps it was my dad and brothers' repeated atempts to drown me in the lake by our summer cottage. So in high school I joined the swim team. Despite the less than pleasant girls on the team I stuck with it. (Why are adolescent girls so nasty?) However a move in the middle of high school brought me to a new high school with (gasp) even nastier (well, at least clichier) girls. So I stopped swimming after that and focused on gymnastics. Then after that illustrious career was over. I became a runner - did the whole marathon thing. I thought about adding swimming as my cross training as my body broke down but ended up falling in love with it. (really for the first time) and now use running as my cross training for swimming. Swimming is the best!
So many of these stories sound like me! I quit swimming my junior year in high school (started at age 6) because I wanted a life. Morning practices all week and Saturdays, too, were killing my social life. :p When I finally did quit, I really hated swimming, too. In college, I didn't really play any sports, but I did take up rollerblading. I enjoyed it a lot. After graduation, I played beach volleyball, and I continued that for 3 years until the club that I played with changed where we played and it just wasn't as convenient for my schedule to play. I also worked out off and on from the time I graduated college until now. I recently (in November) started swimming again, and I never realized how much I missed it.
I swam off and on through college but running was always my love. After college (Knox the greatest !!!! college with a small team), I moved to DC. There my ashtma went crazy. I started to swim and stopped running. Marie Reed in Adams Morgan is a great pool to swim in during a snow storm. One wall is all glass so you can see the now fall. Moved to St. Loius. Started running again because no pool was close to where I lived. Athma went crazy again as did colitis. Had lots of operations. Moved home to be taken care of. Now I only swim. Frequently, I'm the only person in the pool at the Y for hours! It is so bizarre. I tell friends this and they don't believe me. Sometimes, I get in the pool and just swim until I want to stop. No interuptions, no one else. Calm and fun.
