We all know that the best of the best who shine in the Olympics start at, like, age 3-5 and train hard thorought all the years to really achieve their best in their early-mid 20s.Out of curiosity, does anyone know any olimpians that started training very late, maybe closer to their 20s and performed very well at the olympics or were there "old" olimpians on the podium ever(in their 30s)?
And theoretically do you guys think it is possible for someone to start training at an adult age and win in the OLympics?

I don't own a clown suit, but I don't believe you can beat me in a 1000 regardless of the type of suit you're wearing (or not wearing). I'll see you in May at the state meet in Raleigh, Swampthing. Loser buys the lattes (and I'll have mine at 180 degrees, please).
Eight 200s on 3:00? That's my warm up.
I regrettably admit that I was winded this morning, even with the rest I was getting. I wish I could bottle up a good week so I don't have these frustrating weeks.
Why wait til May, there's a nice meet in Charlotte in January you should attend. However, I'm still not nearly man enough to face you down in the 1000 without matching clown suits.

Probably not, because by the time a person gets enough years of training under their belt, the body will probably start feeling the effects of aging. If a person starts at 25, and trains for 15 years (which is porbably close to the years of training olympians get) that will put them at almost 40 years old. The aging at that point which will probably be significant eniugh to take a person out of running for the olympics. It may make them a really notable masters swimmer.
I think it takes a 5 year old person 15 years to produce their personal best, because the body needs 15ish years to mature, and grow. Not because the human body needs 15 years of training. I believe within a couple years with the correct coaching and training efforts somebody starting within their 20's can still swim at an olymipic level. With that in mind swimming at that level is like other professional sport the % of making it to that level are extremely low.
If you believe you can you can, If you believe you might not make it you won't. Sorry to get all Tony Robbins on you.
Aquageek,
Are you saying you don't have time to train 4-6 hrs/day? Sounds like poor time management. Or maybe too much time spent posting on forums like this one!

I believe I can swim a 1000 in a clown suit faster than gull80 but, then again, we both enjoy hot coffee, so our arguments should not be taken too seriously.

Girlie-man.
I get up before I even go to bed, leaving Alexandra Paul pleading for me to return to bed, eat gravel laced with cyanide for breakfast, go to the pool at zero-o'clock in the AM, chop 3 feet of ice out of the lanes, fight off the polar bears and then do 8X200 on 3:00 as a warm up to my warm up. I would tell you the warm up and the workout, but it would rip your sanity clean from your mind and leave you huddled in the locker room corner, weeping in fear.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I am 28 and I swam from 4-21 and got back in the water 4 months ago. According to my splits in practice and how I feel I think that it is entirely possible to be great after your early 20's. The real test will be a swim meet. No matter what it is great to hope.....and have a dream no matter what age!

Alexandra Paul? I should report you to a moderator for referring to my wife in one of your posts.
Do you compete in a clown suit too?

That's pretty much what I said... It's not impossible, but it's not very likely for the majority of swimmers to achieve that.
I would like to apologize also--for Aquageek, that is. Totally inexcusable behavior. Rest assured that he will be dealt with appropriately in due time, clown suit or not.
I don't really swim eight 200s on 3:00 for warmup. But my wife, Alexandra Paul, does. Yeah, that's the ticket.
