The meaning of swimming

(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.) I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense. What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?
  • Fort, your poems are amazing. The anti-breaststroke one was better than I feared. Re:butterfrog,it's ugly, ugly, ugly. The fact I can swim it faster than fly for a 200 doesn't make it elegant. Breaststroke done well is elegant.
  • I think both short axis strokes are beautiful when done well ...

I hope you don't mind S(he)-Man, but I thought this was a wonderful poem and so I am transplanting it from another recent thread to this thread (which is our official board poetry thread). Please don't be mad S(he)-Man.....I really think it is a very good poem (don't you guys agree?!) Ode to Swimming by S(he)-Man: Instead of sipping that glass of vermouth I've accidentally found the fountain of youth No smoking, no drinking, no gambling, no cheating Who could swim 6x800s after taking that beating!? Banished! are beer guts that appear with no warning! It's up at dawn or even 4 in the morning! No coffee; no latte; no double espresso are craved Grab the suit and the goggles and hit the cool waves Pick your poison; be zen; go smooth, even and slow Or jump in with the "animals" and hold 100s on one-double 0 Glide through the water; take a first breath towards the sky Swimming, yes swimming, is the ultimate high Non-swimmers don't see and even ask "Why?" Yet we know the secret; the one to being truly alive We're all on a journey - some seeking fame, riches, and wealth But some, just a few, quest for the discovery of self

  • I think someone better call the hearst. I love this final line! Here's my limerick on distance free. Not up to an epic yet. Need inspiration. Shakespeare wrote limericks though. Distance Free Limerick #1 There once was a fey swimmer who thought, That Endless laps in a pool weren't for naught. When he asked, "Is there more?" I said, "'Tis a bore." Garbage yardage is not what is taught. But that fey swimmer kept right on swimming. Even though he was tres far from winning. Till at last, with a hammer, The faint silenced his clamor. He woke up, and commenced his sprint finning. For Kyra, with a nod to the Beatles: I'm so tired. I haven't slept a wink. I'm soooooo tired. My swimming's on the blink. I wonder if I should wake up Before I start to sink. I'm soooooo tired. My shoulder must have a kink. I think I'll have GU gel, Or drink an energy drink. I'm sooooo tired. I really don't want to think. I wonder if that college thing. Is starting to make a ***? I'm sooooo tired. I'm going to have a drink. But when I wake up tired. I will still go lift the weights. I'm sooooo tired. But I won't leave it to fate. I'll swim and go to nationals. To meet the poets many. I'm sooooo tired. But I've still got skills aplenty. Feel better!! :snore: :snore: :snore: :snore: :drink:
  • Fort, where do you get your fabulous quotes from? Swim like hell and get the agony over with, is my new all time favorite! That one is great. I have a t-shirt that says something along the line of ... the faster the swim the faster the finish though it might be the harder the swim the faster the finish ...

I have a t-shirt that says something along the line of ... the faster the swim the faster the finish though it might be the harder the swim the faster the finish ... That's a running quote. (Got a lot of running books in this house!) I just substituted the word swimming for running. It's from a marathoner too! I hope you're going to join in on the dissing of distance free!
